A very good four volume set in contemporary full tree calf binding with double lettering pieces in red and green. Complete pp. iii-vii 1 222; 2 206; 2 238 & 2 198. No half-titles which may or may not be wanting but the pagination for the prelims to vol. I might suggest that one is required Very good bindings with a little rubbing a couple of volumes slightly chipped to the head/tail of the spines corners lightly bruised. Contents clean and tight manuscript Greek initials to title pages dated 1788 otherwise unmarked no foxing paper crisp. A very good set. A Rare Eighteenth Century Novel. We have managed to located just one other copy at auction in the last thirty years and that at Sotheby's sale of July 21 1993 where it made £1000 on the hammer though seemingly not such a nice copy. Including the Reports of Commander now Captain James Clark Ross and The Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole. 1st Edition. xxxiii 1 740pp illustrated with 31 plates including 6 maps and charts some outlined in colour and 2 folding 24 views some hand coloured. Appendix: xii 120pp cxliv ciii. Half cream leather with dark brown leather boards spine ruled with black leather spine labels titled in gilt. After the embarrassment of Ross's first voyage in which he claimed to see the mountains in Lancaster Sound it took him a decade to source private backing he had lost the confidence of the British Admiralty for a second trip. Ross travelled through Lancaster Sound into Prince Regent inlet and onto Boothia Peninsula while on the way finding remnants of Parry's ship "Fury" which had been wrecked on North Somerset Island. For three consecutive winters Ross and his men were stuck in ice but used the time wisely to learn mapping hunting sewing transportation and language from the local inuit. Ross also organized lectures lessons and scientific inquiries one of which discovered the North Magnetic Pole. In 1832 Ross finally abandoned the ship and managed to live on supplies found at Parry's wreck. A whaler rescued Ross and his crew in 1833 and remarkably it was the same vessel which Ross had commanded on his first voyage. Arctic Bib 14866; Chavanne 1450; Sabin 73381. Overall in Very Good Condition. Although produced to accompany the Narrative the Appendix is much less common and may have been printed in a smaller number. AB 14866 The price is for the set. The lengthy appendix adds significantly to the work and includes additional color plates of Eskimos and a vocabulary of the Eskimo language as well as a report about the natural history of the Arctic. Simon Faxardo With the engraved Spanish royal coat of arms and a woodcut decorated initial both on the first leaf. 4 pp. An account of the Spanish Infanta Maria Annas 1606-46 journey to Vienna to marry Prince Ferdinand King of Hungary and Bohemia and future Holy Roman Emperor. This tract describes the final leg of the journey Maria Anna having originally set out from Madrid in 1629 from Naples across the Papal States to Ancona where she was received on board a Venetian squadron and sailed along the Adriatic coast to Trieste. At Trieste she was met by Archduke Leopold and then travelled overland to Vienna. On her arrival she celebrated her marriage to Ferdinand on 20 February 1631. Maria Anna was considered intelligent and capable and after Ferdinand became Holy Roman Emperor she regularly governed in his place when he was away on military campaigns. The union which further cemented the ties between the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs was cause for celebration in the Iberian peninsula where this tract published in Seville in the same year as the marriage was evidently issued to spread the news of the happy event. Its nature as popular newsletter most likely explains its rarity.With contemporary manuscript foliation in the upper outer corners of the leaves "449" and "450". Included is an appendix giving an account of the treasure taken from the Nuestra Signora del Buono Carmella. This account. preceded the publication of the official account of Lord Anson's voyage by three years' Hill. At the bottom of page 36 of the appendix the exact latitude and remarkably the longitude of the fabled Strait of Anian are provided. This precise location of the Pacific entrance to the elusive Northwest Passage came from a Spanish document captured by Anson and gave rise to the suspicion that the Spanish had discovered the passage but kept it secret. <br /><br />Anson's voyage was a landmark of 18th-century English circumnavigation laying the groundwork for the British exploration of the Pacific in the later half of the 18th century. The expedition set out to cut off Spanish supplies of gold and silver from South America after the outbreak of war in 1739. Whilst successful taking a number of prize ships off the Philippines the cost was high: six ships were wrecked off the coast of South America or in rounding Cape Horn. <br /> Hill 1693; Sabin 95437. Contemporary rebound cloth half calf Each volume with red and black spine labels. Spines stamped and lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Beechey's expedition on board the H.M.S. Blossom formed part of a double-pronged assault on the western approaches to the Arctic. Sent by way of Bering's Strait to explore the northern coast eastward Beechey was to eventually link up with Franklin's second expedition working westward from the Mackenzie River. The two parties came within several hundred miles of each other one of Beechey's vessels managing to penetrate as far as Cape Barrow while Franklin turned back at Return Reef at about 149 degrees west. The narrative contains scientific data descriptions of Eskimo life and culture and much of importance relating to Alaska including the Aleutian Pribilov and other islands the Tuamotu Archipelago the Society Islands and Tahiti Hawaii and the coast of California. There are also valuable accounts of Monterey and San Francisco prior to the American conquest as well as a lengthy account of the mutiny of the Bounty as related by its sole survivor John Adams. Very good. 50 leaves illustrated with 198 tipped-in sepia-toned photographs almost all around 5 x 3 inches a handful somewhat smaller all with white ink manuscript captions in English. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black cloth photograph album with "Places and Faces" in gilt on front cover string tied. Moderate wear soiling and minor scuffing to boards. Occasional creasing and minor wear to images. A unique and informative photographic record of an extensive cross-country journey by a young Japanese man from San Francisco to New York in 1918 and 1919. The trip took place between December 1918 and September 1919 beginning in Yokohama. Though the traveler is unnamed he was most likely Fujisawa Tomonosuke the son of the founder of Fujisawa Yakuhin once one of the major pharmaceutical companies in Japan. The company is now called Astellas Pharma Inc. According to a company history Fujisawa Tomonosuke travelled to the United States in 1919 as the company opened a branch in New York. The last page of the present album shows a Buddhist-style memorial with an explanatory caption on the verso which states that Fujisawa Tomokichi Tomonosuke's father built it in 1918 to console thousands of deaths during World War I. The monument still sits in Domyoji Temple near Osaka. Another clue that the album was compiled by Tomonosuke is the practice by the compiler to identify all the subjects in the album by a prefix and their last name except for one who is constantly referred to as "Tom."<br /> <br /> Tomonosuke's journey begins in Yokohama where he boarded the Tenyo Maru which delivered him via Honolulu to San Francisco on December 26 1918. He stayed in San Francisco for about six months and visited numerous locations around the Bay Area including Stanford University the University of California at Berkeley Ocean Beach Seal Rock Golden Gate Park Oakland Lincoln Park and more. In late-May he makes his way to Los Angeles and Pasadena where he visits vast oil fields where one image is captioned "Hundreds of oil wells in Los Angeles" a Southern Pacific Railroad station the zoo Bush Garden and other sites.<br /> <br /> After a few days in southern California Tom sets off across the continent to his presumed ultimate destination of New York briefly visiting Salt Lake City Denver and Chicago before arriving at Niagara Falls by June 3. He includes numerous shots of the falls before arriving in New York City. His stay in New York was extensive and included many sightseeing tours to locations in New York but also New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He includes shots of Bronx Park the Poughkeepsie Bridge the Victory Arch the Statue of Liberty and other sights around Manhattan along withe scenes in Montclair Atlantic Highland and Culver's Lake New Jersey and a few locations in Pennsylvania such as Sawkill Falls on the Delaware River. He also witnessed the commemoration parades for both the American Army's 2nd Division and General Pershing's "Grand Parade Day" in New York City each of which he preserved in a handful of photographs.<br /> <br /> In addition to the variety of the settings the photographs reveal real skill and technique by the photographer. The images are mostly well composed and informative in nature. Despite the fact that the compiler was Japanese all of the captions are written in confident English lending further credence to the notion that the compiler was highly educated and confident as would be the son of the founder of one of Japan's most successful companies. An exceptional annotated vernacular photograph album preserving the adventures of a precocious Japanese business traveller in the United States just after the First World War. unknown

Travelling from the Hague they visited Utrecht Leiden Zeist Soestdijk Amersfoort Voorthuizen Deventer Doesburg Middachten Rozendaal Arnhem Elterberg Emmerik Kleef Nijmegen Grave Hees Den Bosch Tilburg Dongen Breda Waalwijk Gorcum Vianen Schoonhoven and various country estates along the way such as 't Loo Huis Heemstede and Huis te Voorst. The travelling was done by public means of transport by barge by coach and on foot. Other than the various day trips the work also includes the stories the travellers told each other en route of which many are somewhat erotic in nature.The author remained anonymous by his own request. He was persuaded by his friend and travel companion to publish the account of their travels but requested that the people and names mentioned would be erased for it was initially only written for himself and good friends but now "for the whole world to see". The first edition was published in 1734 by J. Loveringh. The present second edition however is rarer with only one institutional copy recorded in the Dutch Short Title Catalogue STCN.The work has been recased with new end papers the binding has been professionally restored at the upper corner of the front board and the head of the spine. Black and white engraving 320 x 238mm. <p><p>Very rare early proof for an engraving of a potoroo in the zoological Atlas of the Freycinet voyage account: the engraving as finally published would include a further taxonomical detail in the form of added detail of the animal's skull titled "Son crâne" and the caption would be entirely changed renaming the animal completely from Kangurus lepturus as shown here to Hypsiprymnus white. These are names given to different specimens of Gaimard's Rat-Kangaroo collected by the Freycinet voyage zoologists Jean Rene Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard. We are not aware of the reasoning that led to this change of name but such a substantial change from proof to finished engraving is noteworthy.</p> <p>In the text of the Zoologie section Quoy and Gaimard equate the "petit kanguroo ou le kanguroo-rat des habitans du Port-Jackson" with those shown in the First Fleet accounts of Phillip plate 47 and White plate 60 and tell a sad story of the live specimen that they collected: "Notre individu a vécu quelques jours à bord de l'Uranie: il devint victime de la férocité d'un chien que nous avions pris aux îles des Papous et qui l'étrangla au moment où il s'avançait vers lui en cherchant à le caresser." The dog ate our potoroo.</p> <p>They also describe coming across potoroos in the Blue Mountains: "Ces petits animaux sont d'un naturel très-doux et moins timides que les kanguroos. Dans un voyage que nous fîmes dans l'intérieur des Montagnes-bleues de la Nouvelle-Hollande nous eûmes occasion d'en voir un venir enlever familièrement au milieu de la case en terre qui nous servoit d'abri des restes d'alimens et s'enfuir par un trou à la manière des rats. Nous croyons que c'est une variété de l'espèce que nous venons de décrire".</p> <p>The index to the publication lists the animal as "Potoroo White du Port Jackson"."A French voyage in 1816 under the command of Louis Freycinet brought back to Paris a wealth of new specimens information and sketches of kangaroos. The published account of the natural history of the voyage which included striking plates of the 'Kanguroo Laineux' and the 'Potoroo White' was overseen by Georges Cuvier the leading French naturalist of the day" Des Cowley and Brian Hubber "Distinct Creation: Early European Images of Australian Animals" in The La Trobe Journal 66 Spring 2000; online resource. Volume I: pp 10 cc 6 185 1. Volume II: pp 2 187-586 14; Supplement vii 163. Collated and complete with frontispiece two vignette title pages two folding maps and 23 full page plates one folding. In a contemporary binding of red sheepskin with gilt decoration on spines and gilt borders on front and rear boards gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers. Boards scuffed and rubbed chip missing from head of spine a few pages with old repairs to margins scattered foxing especially to the folding maps. Elliott Coues in his 1892 Key to North American Birds wrote: "A great landmark -- one of the most conspicuous of the last century -- was set up with the appearance in 1785 of the second volume of Pennant's 'Arctic Zoology.' The whole work in three quarto volumes with many plates 1784-87 was 'designed as a sketch of the Zoology of North America.' . Pennant treated upwards of 500 nominal species of North American birds. .We are so accustomed to see 'Linn.' Linnaeus and 'Gm.' Gmelin after the names of our longest-known birds that we almost unconsciously acquire the notion that Linnaeus and Gmelin were great discoverers or describers of birds in those days. But the men who made North American ornithology what it was during the last century were Catesby Edwards Forster Pennant Latham and Bartram." Volume 2 includes description and illustration of several extict species including the Passenger Pigeon Eskimo Curlew and Great Auk all of which were still extant at the time these volumes were published. In addition to the pioneering work on birds the work is notable for its descriptions of Steller's sea cow obtained directly from explorers who observed the animals before their extinction as well as for apparently the first published illustration of a North American musk-ox. Welsh naturalist Pennant originally conceived of these volumes as “North American Zoology†but changed the title and focus after the loss of the British colonies. Folds into paper covered card covers measuring 40 x 24cm. Title label upper cover. A little browning along folds occasional spotting and soiling. A little worming causing approximately 1cm of loss in places. Two chops in lower section. A very striking and attractive map. This very large handsome map is a detailed map of the thirteen provinces from which one can see Mt. Fuji. Provinces shown are the eight provinces of the Kantō region Sagami 相模 Musashi 武蔵 Kazusa 上総 Shimofusa 下総 Awa 安房 Kōzuke 上野 Shimotsuke 下野 and Hitachi 常陸 and five other provinces Izu 伊豆 Suruga 駿河 Tōtōmi 遠江 Kai 甲斐 and Shinano 信濃. The map offers a large amount of detailed information such as province and county borders rivers high ways post towns checkpoints villages and scenic spots. <br> <br>The cartographer Akiyama Einen or Nagatoshi 秋山永年 came from Edo and the editor Funakoshi Seizō 船越清蔵 studio name: Shugu 守愚 1805-62 a Confucian scholar from Nagato Province now the western half of present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture. Two volumes quarto with a folding map and 16 engraved plates some folding; original mottled calf binding. <p><p>Cook's second voyage and travels in South Africa by the famous Swedish naturalist. This is the first edition in French the most profusely illustrated of the early editions of the book. This is an example of the quarto version an octavo version appeared simultaneously. Sparrman professor of zoology at Uppsala University was in South Africa when Cook's second voyage called there in 1772; Forster engaged him to accompany the expedition as assistant naturalist. Though much of his book is a narrative of travels in Africa with emphasis on its flora and fauna and a remarkable series of plates on termites and their habitations he includes an interesting account of his voyage with Cook in the first volume - as Hocken notes "Hairbreadth escape from collision of the two ships not mentioned elsewhere. Shocking details as to the food on board. Described the plants which Georg Forster drew. Both interesting and amusing.".</p> <p>Sparrman published an expanded Swedish version of his account of the voyage in 1802 with a second volume in 1818 but this account in its various versions was the only eighteenth-century text by this member of the second voyage.</p> </p> . chez Buisson unknown

A well-annotated vernacular photograph album chronicling about two decades of the travels and experiences of Ray Royse and his family as they trekked from Illinois to California through the Upper West in the first quarter of the 20th century. The Royse family started in Aledo Illinois and numerous photographs feature various family members here. They then traveled through Casper Wyoming Great Falls and Butte Montana and other locations before settling in Long Beach where Ray and his brother-in-law worked at the shipyards. The images here document Ray's training at the Sweeney Automobile & Tractor School in Kansas City driving Harley-Davidson motorcycles attempting to repair a nearly destroyed family sedan visiting the Custer Battlefield and the monument to Buffalo Bill Cody among other western sites scenes in Yellowstone Park and a family drive up Pike's Peak among many others. Ray's efforts to move West reflect the expansion and increasingly wide availability of automobiles and the growing industry in the West following the First World War.<br /> <br /> The photographs here record numerous locations in the American West to which Ray Royse along with his family and friends traveled or worked in in a 1922 Nash and later a Ford Model T. They traveled across the Continental Divide Ray worked for a time at the Anaconda Mines near Great Falls and Butte Montana and later the Standard Oil Refinery at Shelby Montana. Many images show a wrecked Ford Model T with Roy diligently at work trying to repair it before finally resigning his efforts by attaching a sign reading "Rest in Pieces" on the radiator. Another picture shows another Ford weighed down with a huge sack of wool in Bear Creek Wyoming. There are also images emanating from Dublin Gulch near Butte; Livingston Montana; Wind River Canyon in Thermopolis Wyoming; Salt Creek Wyoming; ; and several park scenes in Kansas City. A handful of images feature the Warren family in Butte. Several photographs memorialize the Royse family trip to Yellowstone Park in 1923 with many of the geysers and surrounding landscapes the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone and more. There are also interesting photos from a Royse family drive to the top of Pike's Peak with views from the peak with additional shots from the Garden of the Gods cliff dwellings near Colorado Springs scenes in New Mexico and Arizona in 1929 dams near Great Falls the Beaver Dam in Wyoming a picture of the "Million Dollar Fire" in Casper in 1921 and a beached fifty-five-foot whale in Long Beach dated December 28 1929. Altogether the images clearly illustrate the wandering nature of the Royse family across several states in the American West.<br /> <br /> Ray Royse 1903-1942 was an automobile mechanic metal worker and sheet metal specialist who worked in the Long Beach shipyards from 1929 until 1942 when he was killed in a shipyard accident. He also worked as a coal miner in Wyoming and on the Douglas Sheep Ranch in Wyoming both of which are chronicled in photographs in the present album. He met and married Sylvia Lambert in 1934 in South Dakota before returning to California.<br /> <br /> A wide-ranging and eclectic mixture of original and unique photographs of the West documenting an interesting family who began in Illinois and eventually settled in California. unknown
