1970TA-8Italy: Arnoldo Mondadori Editore 1970. Classic detailed biography by the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile 1885-1978 who was a pioneer in Arctic aviation. Nobile was an aeronautical engineer and aeronautical science professor; designer of semi-rigid airships including the Norge and Italia. Promoted from Colonel to General in the Italian air force following the Norge north pole flight forced to resign following the Italia disaster. Spent five years in the USSR in the 1930s developing Soviet airship program; lived in the US for several years during WW II; returned to Italy in 1944 where he remained until his death in 1978 at age 92. Not only did he make the first transpolar flight increasing knowledge of Arctic geography but he also demonstrated the feasibility of using aircraft in the Arctic for both exploration and transport. In this text Nobile gives a factual authentic account of the failed flight in 1926 of the airship Norge and the disasterous flight in 1928 of the airship Italia. Both the Norge and Italia flights flew over the North Pole but did not land. Description of 12 days of a trip from Paris to Polestra Algeria for a wedding organised by the family Prengrüeber. Side-notes and corrections by the author herself.</p><p>Starting their trip on April 21st of 1890 from Paris a couple is heading towards Algeria. They are in for a rough start as their umbrellas get stolen at Garde de Lyon and as rain followed them from Paris to Marseille and even to Alger all while being sea-sick. <br />During the voyage with her husband Pierre the author is astonished mostly by the rich sights of local gardens mosques casbah… She richly describes the sumptuous clothes of European women but also the way local women wear their veil according to different customs. Over the 12 days described in this manuscript probably preparatory for another account we learn of the French colonial hotels and restaurants Hotel de Nice Brasserie Gruber as well as the presence of the army. The couple seems very inclined to talk with military men. During their travel we can guess their background; they make mention of telegraph photography phonography and autos pinacles of technology at that moment only accessible to the rich.<br />She and her husband adopt a colonialist view on the locals and more than once speak of uncalled-for thieving. They visit Alger the French and Arab parts of town having each night diner with their friends the Julien family. To get to the wedding organised by the Docteur Prengrüebeur colonial doctor part of the anthropological society of Paris they venture further in the country : El-Biar the Kouba Valley Blida the Chiffa gorges Bouffarik Béjaïa Mansouriah caves Sétif…<br />In Palestra they arrive with other families Lüeckel Lagervinais Broussais… on Monday the 28th of April for the civil wedding and stay until after the religious wedding blessed by the bishop of Chartres. It is hard to determine whose mariage it was only that André Julien is the " garçon d'honneur " with a girl from Alger. <br />The manuscript ends at the end of May the second in the city of Batna for no known reason.</p>

Emmeline Freda Du Faur 1882 - 1935 was an Australian mountaineer credited as the first woman to climb New Zealand's tallest mountain After her climb to the summit of Mount Cook in 1910 she is quoted as stating: "I was the first unmarried woman to climb in New Zealand and in consequence I received all the hard knocks until one day when I awoke more or less famous in the mountaineering world after which I could and did do exactly as seemed to me best".1 Following her notoriety she would dispense with a chaperone but retain her now customary climbing attire of a skirt to just below the knee over knickerbockers and long puttees. Page edges slightly nibbled but hardly surprising considering the age of this newspaper. The British Arctic Expedition 1875-1876 leader Sir George Strong Nares was sent by the Admiralty for an attempt on the North Pole by Smith Sound and to explore the coasts of Greenland and adjacent lands. Sailing from Portsmouth in two ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery Henry Stephenson the expedition was unsuccessful in its attempt to reach the pole. Illustrated with a large folding map frontispiece with as usual tears and creases at the upper join now neatly repaired nine large full-page plates on heavy card. many small text images from photographs quarto pp 219 slight age-toning and marking some inner joints rather cracked and weak the last third of the book has rather damp-wrinkled pages with light staining on the last few pages original decorated cloth with paper inlay bevelled edges a bit rubbed and marked the spine dull and age-toned andpulled at the head and tail the upper cover slightly unevenly age-toned. In October 1891 Veitch embarked on a tour of inspection of the great Botanic and Public Gardens maintained by governments in various countries as well as visiting many private horticultural establishments to decide whether the Veitch gardens and nurseries might be enriched by further additions. He set off by way of Rome and Naples to Ceylon thence overland from Tuticorin to Lahore. He continued to Calcutta and on to the Straits Settlements. In Penang he visited the Botanic Gardens whose curator Charles Curtis was formerly employed by James Veitch & Sons as a plant collector before moving on to Singapore where he visited the Botanic Gardens. He then visited Johore before returning to Singapore in February 1892 when he climbed Bukit Timah the highest point on the island with Walter Fox curator of the Gardens. He then travelled to Buitenzorg West Java where he visited the Botanical Gardens. He also explored the crater of Kawah Papandajan volcano and visited Lake Bagendit near Garoet. His travels then took him to Japan where he met Charles Sprague Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum and they undertook a joint plant collecting expedition including ascending the Hakkoda Mountains together. After visiting Korea he reached Australia in 1893. However he found Australia disappointing and wrote that it was easier to collect seed in Japan where there was cheap labour; in Australia "no one will help". He complained that the seeds of many plants "were so tiny he did not know if he was collecting seed or dust". He sent to Kew a collection of dried specimens of 250 species from Western Australia. Issued as a supplement to Volume 14 Number 1 of the magazine Kingu on New Year's Day in 1938. <br> <br>Holes at a number of holes causing a small amount of loss some occasional browning some chipping on margins. The map has clearly been used but is still largely complete. The colourful map of China on a scale of 1:2600000 includes part of Manchukuo and Inner and Outer Mongolia on the north and part of French Indochina to the south-west. It shows East Hebei Autonomous Anti- Communist Council Jidong Fanggong Zizhi Zhengfu 冀東防共自治政府 south of Manchukuo which existed from late 1935 until February the 1st1938. The legend includes national and provincial borders cities roads railways sea and air routes and undersea cables. There is an inset map of East Asia titled "Present Situation of Far East" on the lower right corner which shows the areas under influence of Communism and those under influence of/controlled or colonised by the United Kingdom France Japan and China. <br> <br>The map on the reverse printed in blue and black shows the Asian section of the Soviet Union Manchuria and Mongolia on a scale of 1:3000000.
