Trifold frontispiece panorama and 8 BW plates in very nice condition. The main reason for the low rating of this copy is that one plate page 126 and the map page 40 are missing. 224 pages. After getting my pupils off in the morning I managed to pack and start with my bicycle and luggage by the afternoon express from Redhill to Brighton. There I went to Lewes where I met my cousin Percy Roxby.".Very legibly writen on 42-pages approx. 11000 words interleaved in a photograph album containing 42 half-plate photographs illustrating the tour these inserted 1 per page into the album leaves. The volume measures 10 1/2 x 8 ix 2 1/2 inches and weighs 1.8 kg.The writer has much interest in architecture especially ecclesiastical which is reflected in his choice of subject for many of the photographs."Mont St. Michel.I can and must say a little about the general flavour we obtained from our one-night's visit as it will linger long with me. We fully expected to find the little islnd so crowded with buildings and human beings as to be spoilt to us as a pleasure resort. We were absolutely wrong! Owing probably to the time of the year.we found the little island-town almost given over to ourselves and the rustic inhabitants. We had been led to expect crowds of English and much touting among the citizens. We found none of either.And it was principally owing to this fact that the most delightful 18 hours of our tour in Normandy to me was at Mont St. Michele. We put up at Nadame Poulard's of Omelette fame. The Omelette came to us at dejeuner; very good; but nothing out-of-the-way for France. Moreover we find that Madame Poulard has now retired and the whole establishment is in in the hands of a Company! We climbed up to the Hotel leaving our bicycles at the garage of the City at the foot of the mount. No bicycle could enter the City-proper. Small octavo pp viii 198 publisher's advert 2 pages a little used internally some pages with slight tears to the gutter margin contemporary full calf rubbed worn at the corners raised bands to the spine but no label. With the signature of an early owner John Gillett on the rear endpaper. With the further Quaker signatures of Joseph Gillett of Somerton and William S. Clark. Samuel Bownas was born in 1676 to Quaker parents although his father died when he was a month old. His father had been a Friend during the time of Quaker persecution with meetings of the Friends having been held in his house. In 1696 his life was changed. At this time he was apprenticed to Samuel Parrott a Friend from Briggflatts meeting in Sedbergh. Attending meeting for worship another Friend Anne Wilson rose in worship and accused him of being no better for his attendance of meeting for worship and that would prove perilous for him "in the end". Afterwards he felt called to preach and read the Bible with greater ease. His famous "A Description of the Qualifications Necessary to a Gospel Minister" was first printed in 1750. Having first journeyed to Scotland he sailed for America aboard the Josiah John Sowden master. He landed two months later in Potuxant River Maryland about 29 May 1702 and continued his work. The Wilkes expedition was the first United States scientific expedition by sea working mainly in the Pacific Ocean. Wilkes sailed along the Antarctic continent and throughout the islands of the South Pacific visited the Hawaiian Islands in 1840 and explored the Northwest Coast of America in 1841. The expedition was made up of a number of notable American scientists and their botanical natural history and geological findings are included. Charles Wilkes 1798-1877 "entered the United States Navy as a midshipman in 1818 and became a lieutenant in 1826. In 1830 he was placed in charge of the division of instruments and charts and in 1838 was appointed to command an exploring and surveying expedition in the Southern Seas authorized by Congress in 1836. The expedition including naturalists botanists a mineralogist taxidermists a philologist among others was carried by the sloops-of-war 'Vincennes' and 'Peacock' the brig 'Porpoise' the storeship 'Relief' and two tenders. Leaving Hampton Roads on the 18th of August 1838 it stopped at Madeira and Rio de Janeiro; visited Tierra del Fuego Chile Peru the Paumotu group of the Low Archipelago the Samoan islands and New South Wales; from Sydney sailed into the Antarctic Ocean in December 1839 and reported the discovery of an Antarctic continent west of the Balleny islands; visited the Fiji and the Hawaiian islands in 1840 explored the west coast of the United States including the Columbia river San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento river in 1841 and returned by way of the Philippine islands the Sulu archipelago Borneo Singapore Polynesia and the Cape of Good Hope reaching New York on the 10th of June 1842. He was court-martialed on his return and acquitted on all charges except that of illegally punishing men in his squadron. For a short time he was attached to the Coast Survey but from 1844 to 1861 he was chiefly engaged in preparing the report of the expedition Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition. Wilkes's Narrative "would also have an impact on some of America's most important and influential writers. James Fenimore Cooper an old family friend of the Wilkes's would integrate information from the Narrative into at least two of his sea novels. Herman Melville would purchase his own copy of Wilkes's book and scholars have found traces of the U.S. Exploring Expedition throughout his masterpiece Moby-Dick. Melville appears to have been most taken with the book's illustrations. For example his description of Ishmael's Polynesian companion Queequeg has been attributed to an engraving of a tattooed Maori chief in Volume 2.
