This was the final book by geographer and explorer Clements Markham. On 29 January 1916 while reading in bed by candlelight Markham set fire to the bedclothes and was overcome by smoke. He died the following day. Lands Of Silence was unfinished but it was completed by F. H. H. Guillemard and published in 1921 five years after Markham's death. It is a comprehensive account of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions from earliest times to Scott's doomed final journey to the South Pole in 1912. Markham's active involvement in Polar exploration and spanned 60 years ranging from the search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to masterminding Captain Scott's first expedition. Highly acclaimed upon publication it is still regarded as one of the most important contributions on the subject. Markham himself was actively involved in polar exploration for over 50 years. Arctic Bibliography 10939; Spence 755. Particularly valuable because of Markham's personal involvement in many of the British polar expeditions during the late 19th - early 20th centuries. The British Graham Land Expedition was a completely amateur expedition except for their ship's Royal Navy Captain and engineer. "The objectives were simple: experience the adventure of polar living matching danger and daring while exploring Graham Land by ship sledge and airplane" .But as far as our exploratory work is concerned we were able to work in a previously unvisited part of the Antarctic and make two major discoveries. First that Graham Land is part of the Antarctic Continent and not an archipelago as was previously thought and secondly that a great channel running approximately north and south separates Graham Land from Alexander Land. Since our return to England His Majesty the King has graciously given permission for this channel to be called King George VI Sound." - Author's preface.Conrad 302 Renard 1337 and 1338 Spence 1017 SPRI 14274.
