19034018Washington D.C Washington 1903. First Edition. Hardcover Original Cloth. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Signed by persons connected with book. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY: Full Title: ALASKAN BOUNDARY TRIBUNAL Atlas Accompanying the Case of the United States Before the Tribunal Convened at London Under the Provisions of the Treaty between the United States of America and Great Britain Concluded January 24 1903. 1st Edition 1st printing. Very large folio 46cm. Original covers titled in gilt on front plain end papers; 6pagesList of maps and biographical notes of Cartographers; 25 maps some in color. Minor shelf wear. Presentation copy to Henry S Wellcome with the compliments of John W Forster. U.S. Secretary of State Government. Reproductions of maps used in 1903 border disputes with Britain showing the American claim to the land; effectively a cartographic history of Alaska. When the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1821 it inherited a dispute over the territory's border with British Columbia. The Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-98 exacerbated tensions until the 1903 Hay-Herbert Treaty under which the nations entered arbitration to resolve the dispute. The arbitration's conclusion favored the United States sparking Canadian frustration that Britain had not better defended its interests. This atlas presents official facsimiles of the maps presented by the U.S. in the arbitration process. 21 are facsimiles of historical maps from Russian French German British Canadian and American atlases dating between 1798 and 1863; many are depicted with facsimiles of title pages from the source atlases. The remaining four maps were produced in 1903 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey including one depicting the locations of Native American villages along the border. Quantity Available: 1. 24256Good. Scarce political cartoon albumen photo of a drawing on a cabinet card mount condemning the short-lived 1885 attempt at reuniting the five Central American republics led by Guatemalan General Justo Rufino Barrios. Guatemala and Honduras supported the effort while Nicaragua El Salvador and Costa Rica opposed it as did Mexico. Barrios was considered dictatorial and overly ambitious by his opponents and is depicted here as a rather skinny lion with Mexico holding its tail and identified as the "American Nero." Several of his "victims" are depicted as skulls underneath the lion. Costa Rica Nicaragua and El Salvador are personified as beautiful women under a banner reading "Unidas no nos come el 'Minotauro'" -- "United we will not be eaten by the Minotaur." Britannica says "Barrios became Guatemalan army commander and the power behind the president Miguel GarcÃa Granados in 1871 when the Conservative Party government was overthrown. After replacing GarcÃa Granados in 1873 Barrios carried out sweeping reforms based on his liberal philosophies. His presidency became known as “the Reform.†He subjugated the local aristocracy; expelled the Jesuits and confiscated church property; established civil marriage and divorce; enlarged and laicized the school system; built highways railroads and telegraph lines; encouraged the growing of coffee as the basis of the country’s agriculture; and promulgated a new constitution 1876. about unification by force but he was killed in battle while invading neighbouring El Salvador. He intervened repeatedly in the affairs of the other Central American republics in an effort to restore the five-nation federation that had collapsed in 1838. When political persuasion failed he attempted to bring about unification by force but he was killed in battle while invading neighbouring El Salvador." Mount measures 4.25 x 6.25 inches contrast is light. PLEASE NOTE -- our first two images are an accurate representation of the image. The third image has enhanced contrast to aid in viewing the cartoon. unknown
