Printed colour pictorial map 33 x 48 cms; 41.8 x 54.5 cms sheet central fold sheet toned corners chipped with some loss to the bottom border and at the central fold in good condition; and on the verso "Movie-Go-Round" by Louella O. Parsons black and white photos and advertisements. Pictorial map printed for the weekend supplement of the Randolph Hearst owned newspaper the Los Angeles Examiner. The map-maker and artist Howard Burke had also worked for the San Francisco Examiner and was known for pictorial maps many with a persuasive or rhetorical edge and as here were designed to shore up American patriotism and defences against a wider world in the increasingly turbulent pre-war 1930s. The caption to this map outlines a multi-billion dollar 25 year proposal by Congressman J. Buell Snyder for a network of coast to coast transcontinental highways "in case of an attack by a foreign power at any point along the border". Buell Snyder earned the soubriquet "the father of superhighways" and during the War he was assigned to a Congressional Committee in charge of appropriations for the War Department. Scarce. . Edges neatly repaired; a little browning and slight smudges in the text; very good copy. 8vo contemporary panelled sheep neatly rebacked with the original spine laid on brown leather spine label gilt decorations and lettering. Informed and lively observations on Spain at the end of the 17th century the political intrigues of the monarchy Spanish culture - including bull fighting and theater - and one allegorical tale entitled "The Story" about the "Monarchy of Philippia" all written in a series of letters to a Mr. Brunet from "His Devoted Friend R.--" who apparently visited Spain and northern Africa between 1694 and 1696. The "Epistle Dedicatory" signed "E. L." in this variant is signed "E. Lewis" in the other equally scarce variant. See ESTC R13796. Small octavo pp viii 198 publisher's advert 2 pages a little used internally some pages with slight tears to the gutter margin contemporary full calf rubbed worn at the corners raised bands to the spine but no label. With the signature of an early owner John Gillett on the rear endpaper. With the further Quaker signatures of Joseph Gillett of Somerton and William S. Clark. Samuel Bownas was born in 1676 to Quaker parents although his father died when he was a month old. His father had been a Friend during the time of Quaker persecution with meetings of the Friends having been held in his house. In 1696 his life was changed. At this time he was apprenticed to Samuel Parrott a Friend from Briggflatts meeting in Sedbergh. Attending meeting for worship another Friend Anne Wilson rose in worship and accused him of being no better for his attendance of meeting for worship and that would prove perilous for him "in the end". Afterwards he felt called to preach and read the Bible with greater ease. His famous "A Description of the Qualifications Necessary to a Gospel Minister" was first printed in 1750. Having first journeyed to Scotland he sailed for America aboard the Josiah John Sowden master. He landed two months later in Potuxant River Maryland about 29 May 1702 and continued his work. Approximately 20 photographs those of Sri Lanka and Switzerland are superior-quality highly gelatinised prints. Half morocco and morocco-grain cloth ruled in gilt and blind all round and lettered 'Photographs' in gilt on the front cover; all edges gilt; covers lightly rubbed; later paper labels to the spine; leaves bowed and slightly tanned; a handful of photographs with some very slight loss at the edges; a few others lightly discoloured; overall in excellent condition.
