192658596Brno: Vydalo Druzstvo Moravsky Legionar 1926. Paperback. Very good. 155pp. Sextodecimo 17.5 cm Pictorial wraps with unstapled gatherings which was common for Czech paperbacks of the time. With 21 photographic illustrations and a map of Eurasia. With an expressionist cover illustrated by Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova.

Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova 1894-1980 was the first female wordless novelist and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malirka Na Cestach The Artist on Her Journey recounts this period in her life. In Paris she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Frans Masereel the originator of the form and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator and was highly regarded in her native land though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014 when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova" and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work however is still not widely available. Vydalo Druzstvo Moravsky Legionar paperback

1863015336London: John Murray 1863. First edition. With a folding engraved frontispiece a little worn and marked and poorly folded a little fraying at the margins eight other plates 12 illustrations within the text a folding map at the rear in good condition octavo pp xvi 395 endpapers rarther soiled title page thumbed and age-toned contemporaqry half morocco and marbled boards the paper cover to the boards worn through in places the leather only a little rubbed. From the library of Compton House Liverpool with their stamp on the spine a label and stamp on the front endpaper and a few stamps throughout. Unfortunately a previous owner has started to try and erase the stamps and has got to work on the title page the next page and the first page of text with the result that there is considerable loss of surface to the page and in one case an actual hole; fortunately common-sense exhaustion or death interrupted them - it would have been better if they had not started their labours. Despite the faults this is still a good sound copy of a scarce title. Compton House Liverpool was one of the first purpose built department stores in Europe. The original building of 1832 was burnt down and rebuilt in 1867 so this would have been one of the first books acquired. The new store soon closed however and was re-opened as the Compton Hotel. It seems likely that the library would have been retained as the reading room. First Edition. Half-Leather. Good. John Murray Hardcover
