He was a strong believer in the "open polar sea" - that is that the Arctic Ocean was open and free of ice above latitude 80 or so. Narrative of the Hayes Arctic Exploring Expedition to extend northward the exploration of the Second Grinell Expedition and to make scientific observations and collections.
