A handsome album documenting missionary work in a little-known area. <br/><br/>The party almost certainly attached to the Church of Scotland Mission evidently enjoyed their time in Africa as they proceeded from Tanganyika into Central Africa. Among the photographs are shots of a native witch doctor women preparing food native sports including pillow fighting as well as topographical images. The also found time to hunt and thirteen pages are dedicated to big game. There are images of eland lion leopard elephants koodoo bushbuck hippopotamus zebra reedbuck porcupine sable wild boar buffalo hartebeeste and wildebeeste. <br/><br/>Lastly there is a photo of the Zomba Church belonging to the Church of Scotland Mission and one of the Blantyre Church which was completed in 1891. Inspired by the example of David Livingstone the Church of Scotland decided to establish a mission in Malawi in the mid-1870s. It was on the basis of their influence that Malawi became a British Protectorate. unknown books

Stab binding bound with grey ribbon patterned cloth over boards 13 x 9.25 with handwritten titles on front board; contains 19 grey heavy cardstock leaves each featuring numerous b/w photographs more than 150 in all average size is 3 x 4.25 affixed to rectos and versos with photo-corners most of them labeled by hand in German with some English. Boards a little rubbed and scuffed else fine. <br/><br/>A lovely young African woman wearing robes a turban and a necklace clutches a pipe in her teeth and poses for the camera in front of a thatched roof house. The photograph bears the handwritten label Basutofrau aus dem Hinterland von East London. So begins this collection of images photographs taken by the author and postcards of Cape Town and South-West Africa in 1931. It offers a nice balance of the personal with images of the authors friends at picnics hiking with men in suits and hat and the ladies in dresses and high-heeled shoes! on ship and watching street performers and the more broadly interesting streetscapes and landmarks. The African people it seems were also generously willing to smile for the camera. Postcards have labels printed in English identifying Camps Bay Chapman Peak government buildings memorials etc. and the photographs taken by the author usually identify the place and date tidy penmanship in German and often with a quip. Though a few of the authors photographs are a little blurry or over-exposed most are nicely composed and all of the images photos and postcards are bright and clean. A detailed and beautifully illustrated account of the expedition Filippi led from April to September of 1906 to explore the snow range of Ruwenzori upon the borders of Congo and Uganda in the center of Equatorial Africa. Murdoch 1866-1957 a civil engineer assistant engineer on the first Aswan Dam project director-general of irrigation for the Egyptian Government subsequently Under Secretary of State for Public Works and finally adviser to Egypt's Minister of Public Works served in Egypt for 23 years. He was responsible for the planning and completion of overall drainage schemes for lower Egypt which finally dealt with about 3000000 acres. He also designed the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile and put into operation the first stages of the Gezira irrigation schemes for the conversion of virgin land in the Sudan for cotton growing. His detailed report Nile Control published in 1920 was an early valuable guide to the effective water resource management of the Nile. <br/><br/> Government Press hardcover books

Attractive rustic image of two African women clapping beneath a quote from António Agostinho Neto 1922-1979. Neto served as the first President of Angola having led the MPLA in the war for independence. Known for his contributions to literature he is considered Angola's preeminent poet. The text quoted along the lower half is from his poem "Sculptural Hands": "I see beyond Africa / love emerging virgin in each mouth / in invincible lianas of spotaneous life / and sculptural hands linked together / against the demolishing waterfalls of old / Beyond this tiredness in other continents / Africa alive I feel it in the sculptural hands / of the strong who are people and roses and bread and future." This important two-year expedition to Liberia and the Congo led by Strong in the company of seven fellow Harvard scientists was the first full-scale attempt to document the etiology of a variety of tropical diseases as well as documenting existing sanitary conditions in Liberia and colonial West Africa.
