First edition of this very scarce follow-up to this African adventurer’s “King of the Wa-kikuyu†and relates his adventures as an elephant ivory poacher in the Lado Enclave of East Africa and travels through British East Africa Uganda Belgian Congo and Ethiopia. He was the first Eurocaucasian trader to travel from Addis Ababa Ethiopia to the capital of Kenya. Boyes 1874-1951 first arrived in East Africa when Nairobi was largely uninhabited made friends with the Kikuyu was admitted to their blood brotherhood became their uncrowned king and later settled down as a coffee grower and dairy farmer. All clean and unmarked except Vol III has an unattractive dark brown stain coffee on two facing pages which has leaked onto the surrounding dozen or so pages and lightly to the bottom ends. 1903016271Boston: Houghton Miffin 1903. These are two very good hardcover volumes bound in full red morocco one with five raised bands on the spine the other with four raised bands decorated in gilt. We offer both volumes together as they are both first editions and both were bound in fine red leather bindings by the reknowned Holzer Bindery Boston. The bindings have gilt circular devices on their front covers and bookplates on their inside front covers identifying them as having been awarded as prizes by the Latin School Boston in the years 1913 and 1915. Both volumes were given to the same individual. Both bookplates signed in ink by the Rector of the school. Additionally all page edges are gilt. The spines and edges of the red leather bindings are darkened. Completely clean inside. The Hill Towns of Italy was published in October 1903. The Plain Towns of Italy was published in October 1911. Both are first editions. Both volumes are completely clean inside and are illustrated in black & white with Alinari photographs of Italian buildings and streets. Both volumes contain double-page color maps: the Hill Towns is of Central Italy; and the Plain Towns is of Upper Italy. Both volumes are stamped Holzer Binder Boston in gilt on the rear board inside lower edge. Both volumes with different red and gray marbled endpapers. 8" high X 6" wide 398 & 603 pages. A history and chronology of the British involvement in the British colonies as given in the title; OCLC notes that an illustrated and engraved title page appears only in Vol. 1 of this series of works by R. Montgomery Martin Esq. c. 1803-1868 the "late treasurer to the Queen at Hong Kong and member of Her Majesty's Legislative Council in China." Robert Montgomery Martin's History of the British Colonies was first published in 1834-5 and "occupies five volumes and slightly more than 3000 loosely-printed octavo pages. It offered the first comprehensive account of the globe-spanning version of the British empire which had taken shape in the course of the Napoleonic wars placing India and Canada under the same umbrella as Malta and Gozo." This "history" went through several iterations the last being The British Colonies issued in the 1850s which boasted a quite impressive list of subscribers including the Queen the Earl of Derby and the third Earl Grey" see Alex Middleton Robert Montgomery Martin and the origins of 'Greater Britain' at oradotoxdotacdotuk. "Mboya's role in Kenya's politics and transformation is the subject of increasing interest especially with the prominence of American politician Barack Obama. Obama's father Barack Obama Sr. was a US-educated Kenyan who benefited from Mboya's scholarship program in the 1960s going on to get married during his stay there siring the future Illinois Senator and President. Obama Sr. had seen Mboya shortly before the assassination and testified at the ensuing trial. Obama Sr. believed he was later targeted in a hit-and-run incident as a result of this testimony" Wikipedia.
