Elephant folio (54x38 cm). Title-page on a single-sheet leaf (verso blank), 5 pages of text printed in letterpress, (1) blank. Plus 3 colour lithograph plates. Original printed wrappers, part of front torn-off with no loss of text. In fine condition. Excellent copy, preserved entirely in the original state. ~ First edition. Drawn and lithographed from the stone by T. Hooiberg. Conradus Leemans (1809-1893) was the first Egyptologist to publish a systematic catalogue of all the contents of one of the major European Egyptological collections. He began the great official gouvernment publication of the monuments and papyri in the Leiden collection in 1839, which appeared in parts from then until 1882. Willem Pleyte (1836-1903) was conservator of the Egyptian collections at Leiden, later director of the Museum. A gelatin silver photograph of a section of the actual Papyrus is included. It comes from the collection of Egyptologist Prof. Heerma van Voss (1923-2015) with his ink stamp on verso. Beinlich-Seeber 11572.

[AND:] Atlas containing 23 plates, numbered I-XXIII, comprising of a finely engraved folding map and 22 finely engraved views, 16 of which are double-page, the others mostly with multiple images to each. Hardcover, the text volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spines with raised bands between compartments, direct gilt lettering and volume number, black fleurons in remainders, gilt ornamentation at head and foot, handsome marbled endpapers, joints of one spine neatly mended. In fine condition, bright interiors. The Atlas is slightly larger as issued, keeping ample margins all around, and bound differently in full tree calf, gilt tooled sides and edges, gilt spine, crimson morocco lettering-piece in gilt, marbled endpapers; bit rubbed in places, spine ends chipped, corner-tips bit worn, light foxing and yellowing mostly to blank margins and verso of plates, small old mark to verso of one plate. In a very good condition. A charming copy. A very attractive set. ~ Bibliothèque Portative des Voyages, X-XIII. Norden's "Voyage d'Égypte et de Nubie" was first published posthumously in 1755, by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. Norden, who died in 1742, managed to see part of his work in print when he published in 1741 a pilot edition under the title "Drawings of Some Ruins and Colossal Statues at Thebes in Egypt". Complete set, the text volumes with the small bookplate of Docteur Rickaert inside each cover.
