Printed on a single folio sheet 17" x 23" the captioned image is 12.75" x 19.25" now presented in cream mounting boards 30" x 24" glazed behind clear mylar. Beautifully hand-coloured to the highest standards of the time. An example in excellent condition clean fresh beautifully preserved. FROM One of the most desirable of all travel and COLOURplate books. A very interesting image of the Temple at Kom Omboan unusual double temple built during the Ptolemaic dynasty 180-47 BC. This was painted prior to the temple's restoration by by Jacques de Morgan in 1893 and in the image most of the temple remains hidden beneath the shifting desert sand. A group of locals standing beside one of the columns provides an excellent sense of scale. <br> We have a good number of impressive images from the Standard Folio Edition of this classic work available for purchase. As well as many views of Egypt we also have available views of Nubia Petra Sinai the Jordan Tyre Sidon and Baalbec. Please inquire for further details.<br> In the course of two and a half months in 1838 traveling some 800 miles south from Cairo Roberts recorded the monumental temple sites along the Nile in more than a hundred sketches. As the first British artist to sketch the monuments of Ancient Egypt set on "Plains so vast.that until you come near them you have no idea of their magnificence" Roberts was well aware of the stir his drawings would create in London. According to John Ruskin writing in PRAETERITA Roberts's drawings "were the first studies ever made conscientiously by an English painter not to exhibit his own skill but to give true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest. Book has minor shelfwear.; Inscription on ffep by author.; 1 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 342 pages; It is the thesis of this book that the birth of the state usually associated with the emergence of the Greek "polis" can in fact be traced in the foundation myths and practices of the ancient Egyptian monarchy to which the feminine principle is crucial. The central significance of women is demonstrated through exploration of Egyptian Hittite Babylonian and other myths in which we have an account of the creation as a birth struggle. Creation ends with the enthronement of kings and and although from the beginning there is no doubt that the first monarchies were patriarchal the processes of empowerment were female. The powers of Hathor and Tiamat Ishtar and Anath reside in their reproductive capacities as powers of creativity of which the social power of kings is merely imitative. The form in which the institutional longevity of political office was first expressed was that of "twinning". This notion that the king had two bodies - one his mortal body and one his immortal "other" - can be seen in the concept of Greek "daimon" in the "genius" of the Roman Emperor and the "mystical body" of European Kings. It has its prototype in the pharaoh and his "ka". The "ka" as an imperishable "double" designated the corporate life of all social collectivities in ancient Egypt the basis perhaps for the "corporation" and its institutional "representative" in Roman Law and early modern political theory. It seems that the ancient monarchy may have represented a real altenative to the hegemonic male warrior "polis" to which we owe so many of our political institutions and legitimating myths. The modern welfare state itself which grew up under the wings of Kings owes more to the conception of divine bounty dispensed through beneficent monarchs than to the assertive individualism of classical republicanism.; Signed by Author . 0044453760 .
