89681The Three Arts Club London: Alexandria Carleah . Original manuscript. Single sheet with writing on one side. Fair. The format is approximately 8.75 inches by 7 inches. This has been removed from a scrapbook per residue on the verso and has small edge tears. It is undated on The Three Arts Club stationery. The Three Arts Club was an organization founded in Chicago in 1912 by social activist Jane Addams and more than 30 other female civic leaders who wanted to change the composition of the male-dominated art world by encouraging women to pursue careers in the arts—eight years before women had the right to vote. One of eight clubs spanning Europe and the United States—from Paris and London to New York City and Philadelphia. The Club was originally located at 19a Marylebone Road London in the building that was originally The Cripples’ Home and Industrial School for Girls which closed c.1910 and then Northumberland House became the new home of the Three Arts Club. The Club had originated c. 1907 in The Strand as the Frances Club. It was founded by Hilda Pocock as a day club for women working in music art and drama. It had an advisory board that included actor Arthur Pinero 1855-1934 composer Edward Elgar 1857-1934 and artist John Singer Sargent. The aim of the Club was to provide safe inexpensive lodging and social amenities to professional and student women in the arts. Bedrooms for approximately 100 women were available for short or long-term stays plus a communal dining hall writing and reception rooms and an entertainment hall. Famous actresses who resided there included Gwen Frangçon-Davies 1891-1992 and Binnie Hale 1899-1984. This may have been written to Alix Jennings 1884-1980 who was a painter of still life and portraits borne Alice Agnes Thomson in Carlisle. The text reads Dear Missing Jennings -- I have had a letter from Miss Pocock telling me you have so very kindly consented to write a skit on the club for us for April 21st. I am really very very grateful illegible. Could you dine with me at the club Thursday or Friday at 7-30 when we might have a chat about it Yours Sincerely Alexandria Carleah.
