There is an Index of Authors at the back.<br /><br />From the Introduction: "The motive that prompted the compilation of this little volume was a desire to collect into convenient form some of the more serious thoughts of Harvard students as expressed in their best verse with the hope of creating in the public mind a better impression of the standard of undergraduate literary work."<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Bright gilt top page edges. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge between the copyright and 1st Introduction pages despite the crack the front cover is still firmly in place and is not shaky. The text pages are clean with no notable issues found. "F.H.S. Jr. Cambridge May '99" written in pen on the front end paper. Tight binding with no cracks. The fold-out map at the back is present but has torn away at the inner edge and is detached. The text pages are in nice condition - mostly clean with only some mild foxing here and there though there is heavier foxing to the front and rear end papers. The blank page facing the 1st Preface page has 9 lines written in old handwriting in pencil about "Dr. Kirk" Sir John Kirk who was an English naturalist and companion to David Livingstone. There is an old bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Overall the book is in Good- condition due to the detached map. Harper & Brothers hardcover

His brother Charles 1821-1873 likewise had his health broken by Africa. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Red cloth binding with black titling on the spine. Clean text; 2-page illustration of the Great Cataracts of the Zambesi xxii 638 pages fold-out map and a six-page publisher's catalog of "Books of Travel and Adventure" including two titles by Sir Richard Burton. Several discreet chops from former-owner and a stamp on the rear paste-down. There is light rubbing to the margins and the spine has darkened. While the lettering is readable it is a bit obscure. First American edition of the record of Livingstone’s extraordinary series of travels which reflect a continuous seven years of scientific geographical work and new discoveries. From the time of Livingstone’s departure from Zanzibar in the beginning of 1866 to the day of his death in Illala at the end of April 1873 he drew the world’s attention to the great evil of the African slave traffic. The objects of the expeditions were the suppression of slavery and the exploration of the south central lake system of South Africa.<br /> <br /> Livingstone 1813-1873 was a celebrated explorer who produced a wide body of knowledge in such fields as geography technology and the social and medical sciences. His insight concerning quinine as an ingredient for the cure of malaria was important.
