In un'etnografia avvincente di ciò che sono la medicina tradizionale e la realtà della malattia nell'Africa contemporanea, vengono qui esplorati i saperi e le pratiche dei guaritori bantu nel sud del Camerun. In quest'area, come altrove, la lotta contro le minacce del male e della morte condotta dai "signori della notte" ha dovuto misurarsi con altre tecniche e altri immaginari: la medicina dei bianchi, veicolo di una nuova razionalità della malattia e della cura, e l'epopea missionaria, che ha introdotto altre figure del desiderio e una diversa accezione morale del male e della colpa. L'obiettivo è quello di mettere in luce la capacità della medicina tradizionale africana di rinnovare i propri repertori simbolici di fronte alla crisi indotta dalla colonizzazione e dall'evangelizzazione, ma anche di interpellare le sfide e le contraddizioni di una modernità incerta, contrassegnata da disuguaglianze e violenze. Accanto all'immenso patrimonio di conoscenze di cui i guaritori serbano il segreto, il libro rivela profili solitamente trascurati di una pratica i cui protagonisti conoscono inquietudini, ansie e dubbi non diversi, in fondo, da quelli dei loro malati, ma trasformati - attraverso l'esperienza della "chiamata", il "desiderio di guarire" o la scoperta del carisma - in poteri di cura.
