P5342Paris: 1970-1974. Quartos 29 à 18 cm. Original pictorial wrappers; 18 to 30 pp. each. Most copies very good only four and five with light creasing to wrappers and upper spine of issue 4 lightly frayed. Substantial run lacking only the final two issues of this illustrated surrealist periodical issued from 1970 to 1976 with a pause in 1975. The periodical was an important international signal against the supposed death of the surrealist movement post-1969 when it was denounced by leading members of the French Surrealist group: "The Parisian Surrealists who refused to abandon the movement regrouped in close relation with their friends in Prague around the Bulletin de liaison surréaliste. They were also supported by Surrealists in the United States" Michael Löwy Morning Star 108. Indeed the high number of contributions reflecting the Czech surrealist experience is noteworthy especially by post-war representatives such as the Å vankmajers MarenÄin Stejskal and Vratislav Effenberger. With a joint introductory statement by Jean-Louis Bédouin Jean Benoît Vincent Bounoure Jorge Camacho Joyce Mansour and Michel Zimbacca "No one has the right to dictate a Surrealist 'line' and still less to set it down" / transl. by Löwy. Among the contributors are Karol Baron Bédouin Vincent and Micheline Bounoure Vratislav Effenberger Robert Guyon Marianne van Hirtum Ted Joans Robert Lebel Mansour Albert MarenÄin Renaud Cabanel Nicolas Calas Camacho Herbert Marcuse Morin Martin Stejskal Svab Å vankmajer Å vankmajerova and others. Illustrated with drawings and photographs the issues contain poetry prose manifestos and theory surrealist games as well as lists of recently published surrealist works. The journal appears to be quite scarcely represented in institutions which typically only show the 1977 reprint by Savelli. unknown books

5869SUPERBE LETTRE SON AMI REN ALLEAU DANS LAQUELLE IL ABORDE LA NOTION DTERNIT......Jarrive peine reprendre pied, (...). 1880145371880. Albumen photograph Bedouin cavalry charge circa 1880 documents mounted warfare practices among nomadic groups in the Arabian desert during the late nineteenth century a period when Bedouin tribal forces maintained regional influence through mobility horsemanship and control of desert routes. The image captures armed horsemen in coordinated motion with swords drawn providing visual evidence of cavalry tactics central to intertribal conflict and territorial defense prior to the consolidation of modern state authority in the region. Such imagery supports research into Middle Eastern military history nomadic social organization and the representation of non-Western subjects in early photographic practice.

Single albumen print measuring approximately 7" x 9" depicting approximately a dozen mounted Bedouin riders in full gallop across open desert terrain. The composition includes figures in the foreground advancing with raised swords with additional environmental detail visible in the background including tents near a palm tree and distant mountainous forms along the horizon. The photograph captures a dynamic moment of movement unusual for the period given the technical limitations of nineteenth-century photography which more commonly produced static or posed scenes. No visible inscriptions noted; composition emphasizes both action and landscape context.

Produced during a period when photographic processes required long exposure times the successful rendering of motion in this image indicates either careful staging or a rare attempt to document kinetic activity in situ. Bedouin cavalry traditions remained central to Arabian Peninsula power structures throughout the nineteenth century preceding the military and political transformations that accompanied Ottoman decline and later state formation in the early twentieth century. Visual records of mounted action from this period are comparatively limited particularly those that attempt to depict combat or maneuver in progress making the photograph relevant for studies of early visual ethnography colonial-era image production and the documentation of pre-modern military systems. Light wear consistent with age; image remains clear with strong tonal contrast; overall in very good condition. unknown
