Written entirely as a contemporary duplicate copy by the Notary Public. With docketing sheet old folds separating. Very Good.<br/><br/> The deed was made "in the second year of the independence of the Confederate States of America." For the sum of $2700 Cherry conveys to the Confederate States 27 acres "in the Macon Reserve" boundaries described with a map attached not present here reserving to Cherry a right of way through the lands. A firm statement by the Senate affirming the United States' legitimate claim to Yazoo lands west of the current state of Georgia despite appeals to the contrary by Spain and Great Britain. The report also appoints three commissioners to oversee land claims in the region requests that the United States perform a census to determine the number of inhabitants there and proposes that if the State of Georgia does not object and if the census figures show that such action is warranted a territorial government be established. Tear to top corner of final leaf costing several words on last two pages. Good. <br/><br/> A significant illustration of the nature of the deep South's attachment to the Union in 1850. The Convention expresses Georgia's reaction to the Compromise of 1850. Secession is opposed but on practical grounds only: slavery is more secure inside the Union than out. But "the South is entitled to absolute security and quiet on this subject." The issue of fugitive slaves receives "especial notice." Indeed the Convention asserts that preservation of the Union depends on strict enforcement of the new Fugitive Slave Act. This 'Georgia Platform' "became the cornerstone of southern policy for several years.The Georgia Platform epitomized the attitude of the great majority of southerners in 1850.
