Litografia, antica ed originale, stampata a colori, tratta dal ricercato e raro giornale umoristico settimanale LA RANA, fondato a Bologna nel novembre 1865 da Leonida Gioannetti e da Augusto Grossi. Fu un giornale di grande successo per le sue satiriche caricature a colori di cui alcune in qudruplo foglio che fu uno dei successi editoriali. I politici, lo Stato Ecclesiastico e la politica europea furono i prediletti ispiratori. Il periodico affrontò una grave crisi nel 1873, quando Grossi decise di abbandonare la redazione per fondare Il Papagallo. La Rana sospese le pubblicazioni nel 1911, per cessarle definitivamente nel 1912.

Nel riquadro del titolo sono riportate le seguenti scale: Scala Chilometrica, Werste Russe, Leghe Turche (Agatsch) e Miglia Geografiche di 60 al grado. La presente edizione, definitiva, presenta in edizione originale la biografia di Caterina II. Il Levesque (Parigi, 1736-ivi, 1812) fu storico e poligrafo; assai poco si conosce della sua vita in quanto i suoi archivi sono scomparsi all’inizio del XX secolo. Egli si era recato a San Pietroburgo nel 1773 spronato da Diderot, divendo professore di Lettere nella locale Accademia dei Cadetti e rimanendo in Russia sino al 1780. Nel corso del suo settennale soggiorno russo raccolse il materiale per la compilazione della presente opera, destinata a larga influenza sia sulla conoscenza della Russia in Occidente sia sulla storiografia russa successiva e che fu ritenuta da August von Schlözer e dal principe Dmitrij Golicyn come la migliore storia della Russia fra quelle scritte da stranieri. Coins, Measurements, and Weights from Conversations and Times - Arranged Alphabetically. Rav Sheftel (1844-1905) was Galician rabbi who, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Chaim Berlin and Abraham Kahana. As Kahana writes in the introduction, Sheftel possessed great knowledge of the Torah and Talmud and was respected by those who studied with him. OCLC lists two copies worldwide (JTS and Ohio State) . Pages are browning and becoming brittle, but still in good shape. Repair to binding. Overall Good Condition. (HEB-48-25)

Le ultime 2 carte del I tomo presentano fori e tagli con lesione del testo. Il frontespizio del II tomo che segue presenta fori al marg. interno cosi' come le 4 carte seguenti che pero' non presentano compromissione del testo dal momento che le abrasioni toccano il margine interno bianco. Legatura in mz. pl. coeva con qualche danno nella parte superiore e inferiore del dorso. Opera in buono stato di conservazione, molto fresca, nonostante i difetti segnalati. Traduzione italiana dall'opera francese Etat present de la Russe (Leipzig, 1783) che si prefigge - come si legge nella prefazione del II volume - 'di rendere comune all'Italia cio' che lo era ai solo intelligenti di Lingue oltramontane... e d'illustrare la Russa Imperatrice...'. La traduzione italiana non e' datata ma la data si desume dalla licenza di stampa a p. VIII. Nel testo si procede ad una ricognizione storico-geografico-giuridica dello stato russo. Nella prima parte, infatti, sono analizzati: clima, miniere, governo, nobilta', corte, palazzo d'inverno, la biblioteca ed il museo di curiosita' naturali, lo stato delle scienze, la teologia, la giurisprudenza, la finanza, i commerci, ecc... Inoltre: Istruzione data da Caterina II alla commissione stabilita per formar la compilazione di un nuovo codice di leggi. Nel secondo volume: Regolamento sopra la forma e la maniera di procedere della Commissione stabilita per versare sopra il progetto di un un nuovo codice di leggi; Sbozzo per dare un'idea della forma di governo dell'impero russo; Saggio sopra le forme di governo e sopra i doveri de' sovrani. Very good condition and very crisp inside. Text in German. This is the 1804 Edition of an obscure and rare Geographical publication issued in Weimar/ Germany in the late 1700's and early 1800's named 'Geographische Ephemeriden.' It contains a portrait of Hernando Maghellan and a 16 page report about the Spanish Voyages to North America. Little was known about these Spanish voyages as the Spanish kept things secret. In 1791, Alessandro Malaspina undertook a search for the Northwest Passage. He surveyed the Alaska coast from Yakutat Bay to Prince William Sound. At Yakutat Bay, the expedition made contact with the Tlingit. The expedition's scientists made a study of the tribe, recording information on social mores, language, economy, warfare methods, and burial practices. During the return to Mexico, Malaspina's expedition spent a month at the Spanish outpost in Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island (see below). The expedition made a study of the Nootka. The two ships then sailed south to Mexico, stopping at the Spanish settlement and mission at Monterey, California on the way. Simultaneously an expedition under Francisco de Eliza, exploring the Strait of Juan de Fuca, discovered an entrance to the Strait of Georgia, which prompted further investigation. In Acapulco, Malaspina took over two schooners, the Sutil and Mexicana, placed them under the command of one of his officers, Dionisio Alcalá Galiano, and had them sail north to explore the Strait of Georgia. Galiano's expedition took place in 1792 at the same time as that of George Vancouver. The two expeditions met in the Strait of Georgia and worked together to map the waters and establish the insularity of Vancouver Island

With adventures among the mountain Kirghis; and the Manjours, Manyargs, Toungouz, Touzemtz, Goldi, and Gelyaks: the hunting and pastoral Tribes. , architect and traveller, Thomas Witlam Atkinson (1799 - 1861) and his wife Lucy, spent seven years travelling in Siberia and Central Asia during the period 1847 - 53. Their son Alatau was born during their travels at the beginning of November in 1848 in what is today Eastern Kazakhstan. Bearing in mind the conditions they were living in and the extreme cold, it is a miracle that he survived! Thomas Atkinson's first book "Oriental and Western Siberia: A Narrative of Seven Years' Explorations and Adventures in Siberia, Mongolia, The Kirghis Steppes, Chinese Tartary, and Part of Central Asia" was first published in London and New York in 1858. In the preface to this, his second book describing the travels he (and his wife and son who are invisible in his writing) gives more detail on the natural history and resources of this vast region than he gave in "Oriental and Western Siberia.". He did not confine himself to seeking only to satisfy the scientists among his readership but also discusses the possibility of British commerce in the region. "Our commerce, prodigious as are its operations, is, its is well known, capable of infinite expansion, and I have laid open a field of almost incalculable extent, where enterprise, skill, and industry are sure to find a profitable investment." He also addresses the great interest in Britain in Russian ambitions for the region: "For those of my compatriots who have been alarmed by the approaches of Russia to our Indian Empire, I have faithfully stated every step that has recently been made in this direction, and afforded them an opportunity of learning her present position on the north of the Himalaya. Her existing relations with China, now that we are engaged in a war with its government, will doubtless give increased interest to the facts I have been enabled to collect respecting the several advances she has skillfully made into Chinese territory, and the consequent extraordinary development of her own."
