1st edition. Folio. Newspaper. Illustrated throughout. Includes many advertisements and numerous personal family announcements. Following the Kristallnacht pogroms of November 1938, Jewish life in Germany and Czechoslovakia was even further curtailed and all remaining Jewish newspapers were shut down by the government. In their place, the Nazi Party ordered the creation of a single, new Jewish newspaper, "Das Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt, " that would be directly under Gestapo control. It was published concurrently in Berlin, Vienna and Prague and was occupied to a large extent with announcing the ever-increasing number of anti-Semitic discriminations, orders and exclusions imposed by the Reich government. Over the course of its history, the editors of the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt were Leo Kreindler (1938-42) and Willi Pless (1942-43) . The Berlin edition ran from the 23rd November, 1938 until the final issue of 4th June 1943. The Prague edition continued until 1945. In a ghoulish twist of Nazi irony, Gentiles were forbidden from reading the Jüdische Nachrichtenblatt yet the newspaper's targeted readership, the Jews, were literally hounded to their deaths by the very authorities who presided over the newspaper's ownership! See Reiner Burger, Von Goebbels Gnaden: "Jüdisches Nachrichtenblatt" 1938-1943 (2001) . A mixed collection of 102 issues from Berlin and Prague sold at auction in 2015 for 9225.00 USD. These issues were at one point bound, but the binding was at some point removed. The newsprint is brown and quite fragile, with edgwear and old dampstains, but there is generally little text loss, except to a few letters on the lower outer margins of the final 10 issues. Now housed in an acid-free sleeved portfolio, with each issue in a separate clear sleeve for easy protected viewing. Fair condition, but very rare, very important, and very powerful. (kh-5-47)

Overall in excellent condition free from stamps or markings of any kind the bindings perfectly sound internally beautiful. This is probably the best set we will ever be able to offer. COMPLETE SET OF "CESKOSLOVENSKA FOTOGRAFIE" the most important annual Czech photo publication of the 1930s and 1940s which documents a period of enormous change not only in Avant-Garde Czech photography but in Czechoslovakia itself. Published before during and after WWII during the German occupation even well into the Soviet occupation our set is preserved in museum-quality condition internally immaculate.

¶ It is a remarkable fact that this series was officially issued as the "annual" yearbooks of the Czech Amateur Photography Club and includes the works of highly influential Czech photographs such as Josef Sudek Jaromir Funke Villam Salka Mikulas Pek Jaroslav Seifert Josef Zeman Alois Zych Frantisek Drtikol Karl Mahler Jaroslav Krupka Mirko wagner Josef Mikulka Jindrich Styrsky Karel Plicka R. Sima K. Muller J. Tutsch and several of the leading Czech commercial studios. This annual publication was edited by Augustin Skarda Josef Zeman Josef Bures and others; the photographs were chosen by the editorial committee of the Monthly "Fotograficky Obzor." Each volume has 64 photographic plates with valuable technical details about negative size shutter speed lighting and the camera employed plus fascinating introductory texts usually translated into French English and German in the 1946 and 1949 issues the German text is replaced by a Russian translation.

Our set is absolutely complete with all 13 volumes including the two volumes published during the German Occupation: vol. 10: "Zeme ceska domov muj" The Czech Country is My Home and vol. 11: "Pamatky Cech a Moravy" The Curiousites of Bohemia and Moravia are in original boards apparently following the wrappers issue. The "Occupation" volumes are by no means vehicles of German propoganda; in the words of Josef Bures "these were of course designed by the period in which they had been created; these yearbooks helped to strengthen the national consciousness during the war-time. Their pictorial contents either dealt with history or were absorbed in the beauties of the Czech and Moravian country. In the first yearbook the photographs expressed a conscious escape from the grim presence and the admiration of the national past in the second yearbook the love of the native country strengthened by suffering" from the Preface in vol. 12.

MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. Wurzbach, pp. 534-538/n. 103.

Novellae to Maimonides of the laws pertaining to women (i.e. divorce, relationships, and marriage) by Rabbi Jonathan ben Nathan Nata Eybeschutz (1690/951764), the talmudist kabbalist, and child prodigy. In his youth, after the death of his father, he studied in Prossnitz under Rabbi Meir Eisenstadt and Rabbi Eliezer ha-Levi Ettinger, his uncle, and in Vienna under Rabbi Samson Wertheimer. He married the daughter of Rabbi Isaac Spira, the av bet din of Bunzlau. After traveling for some time he settled in Prague in 1715, and in time became head of the yeshivah and a famous preacher. After the death of Rabbi David Oppenheim (1736), he was appointed dayan of Prague. Elected rabbi of Metz in 1741, he subsequently became rabbi of the "Three Communities," Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbek in 1750. Both in Metz and in Altona he had many disciples and was considered a great preacher. His position in the Three Communities, however, was undermined when a dispute broke out concerning his suspected leanings toward Shabbateanism. This controversy accompanied Rabbi Eybeschuetz throughout his life, and the quarrel had repercussions in every community from Holland to Poland. His main opponent was Rabbi Jacob Emden, also a famous talmudist and a potential rival in the candidature to the rabbinate of the Three Communities. The quarrel developed into a great public dispute which divided the rabbis of the day. While most of the German rabbis opposed Rabbi Eybeschuetz, his support came from the rabbis of Poland and Moravia. A fruitless attempt at mediation was made by Rabbi Ezekiel Landau, rabbi of Prague. Most of Rabbi Eybeschuetz' own community was loyal to him and confidently accepted his refutation of the charges made by his opponent, but dissension reached such a pitch that both sides appealed to the authorities in Hamburg and the government of Denmark for a judicial ruling. The king favored Rabbi Eybeschuetz and ordered new elections, which resulted in his reappointment. After his reelection as rabbi of the Three Communities, some rabbis of Frankfort, Amsterdam, and Metz challenged him to appear before them to reply to the suspicions raised against him. Rabbi Eybeschuetz refused, and when the matter was brought before the Council of the Four Lands in 1753, the council issued a ruling in his favor. In 1760 the debate was rekindled when some Shabbatean elements were discovered among the students of Rabbi Eybeschuetz' yeshiva. At the same time, his youngest son, Wolf, presented himself as a Shabbatean prophet, with the result that the yeshiva was closed. (See Bibliography of the Hebrew Book 1470-1960 #000109183; EJ; M. A. 26053The seventeen bookplates dated between 1922 and 1925. Prague Czechoslovak Republic. Accomplished and attractive bookplates in an impressive range of styles from modernist to traditional several with mystical or masonic overtones produced using various printing processes. The bookplates range in size from 6.5 x 7 cm Herrmann’s own to 11.5 x 17.5 cm. Each is dated with Herrmann’s tiny monogram design adapted to suit its style of composition. The eighteen items are in very good condition each laid down on a 16 x 25 cm piece of textured grey card. In purpose-made worn brown card binding with triangular label on cover with manuscript lettering arranged in modernist design: ‘17 / EX / LIBRIS / VON / ROBERT HERRMANN’. Comparing the lettering of the label with Herrmann’s own bookplate within the collection the simplest depicting a vertical pencil within a circle indicates that the label was designed and executed by Herrmann himself. The seventeen bookplates from between 1922 and 1925 as follows: 6 from 1922 Hugo und Franzi Kornfeld; Dr Leo Kornfeld Viktor Polatschek Albert Porges Olga Stegel Mizi Steiner; 1 from 1923 Friedrich H. Neumann; 6 from 1924 Edith Hahn Robert Herrmann Willy Knepler Franz Nettel Franzi Pick Dr Josef Thimann; 4 from 1925 Anton Ditti Dr Hussein Erfan Margrit Kornfeld Marieluise Kornfeld. A number of the owners were Jewish see for example Nettel whose design features the star of David and some appear to have died in the Holocaust. The 7.5 x 10 cm black and white collotype photographic print appears to show a bas relief modernist design within a jagged border depicting a star shining over a cityscape into which two meteorites are falling.
