From November 9 to December 12 1970 the Interzonal Qualifying Chess Tournament for the Candidates Cycle took place in the splendid city of Palma de Mallorca in Spain which in eliminatory matches would consecrate the challenger of the World Champion Boris Spassky. The expectation generated by the Interzonal competition in the chess world was mainly centered on the participation in the event of the North American Grandmaster Robert Bobby Fischer who came to the tournament as a favorite after his recent huge performances in the tournaments Zagreb who won with a 2-point difference and Buenos Aires won with a difference of. 3.5! in which he showed an enormous superiority against rivals such as Gligoric Smyslov Kortchnoi Panno and Petrosian just to name a few. For many connoisseurs the Fischer phenomenon had exploded confirming the laurels he had already achieved since his times as a child prodigy and it only remained to know if his somewhat unstable character would not play a trick on him in Palma.
