br. Un noto scrittore e viaggiatore ha deciso di lasciare Parigi. Saluta gli amici, la fidanzata, il lavoro e gli impegni. Per sei mesi andrà a vivere in totale isolamento nelle foreste della Siberia, in una capanna di pochi metri sulle sponde del lago più antico del mondo, a 120 chilometri di distanza dal primo villaggio abitato, senza vicini di casa né strade di accesso. Lo attende una solitudine differente da quella del navigatore o dell'alpinista che attraversano paesaggi e scenari: nei boschi ghiacciati l'uomo sta fermo e viaggia dentro se stesso, e la natura si gode lo spettacolo. Da febbraio a luglio Sylvain Tesson si impone un ritmo preciso. La mattina legge, scrive, fuma, disegna. Seguono cinque lunghe ore dedicate alle faccende domestiche: bisogna tagliare la legna, spalare la neve, preparare le lenze, riparare i danni dell'inverno. La vera sfida di questi sei mesi è scoprire se si riuscirà a resistere. L'ispettore forestale che lo accompagna fin lì è chiaro ed enigmatico allo stesso tempo: "Questo è un posto magnifico per suicidarsi...". La solitudine può anche rivelarsi fertile. Quando non si ha nessuno a cui esporre i propri pensieri la carta diviene preziosa confidente, e il taccuino compagno fedele. I giorni trascorrono mentre si scruta il lago e la foresta, si pesca per la cena o si beve un bicchiere di vodka dopo una passeggiata tra i monti. Una sedia di fronte alla finestra è un punto di osservazione ideale per cogliere il respiro del mondo, l'inverno, l'arrivo della primavera.
