183424462Glasgow 1834. Very good overall. An illustrated advertising sheet with 3 columns of Glasgow shipping advertisements which serves as writing paper for a half penny hand written letter. The letter is from Gilkison & Brown to Messrs. Davidson & Syme lawyers and comments that there are no vessels from Clyde to New York at present "nor will there be any for some weeks". It quotes the cabin and steerage passage rates also.

Gilkison & Brown were maritime agents for the Canada Company in Glasgow; they acted as ship and insurance brokers and commission agents. Emigration from Scotland to Canada and other destinations was in response to tenant congestion and starvation as well as land owner bankruptcy. In the 1830s 20000 highlanders emigrated to Canada.

The maritime advertising printed in 3 columns is for: the Royal Exchange Assurance of London; individual ads for 10 ships all out of Glasgow and bound for ports all over the world including New York; Calcutta; Trinidad; the Cape of Good Hope; Trieste Italy Genoa Kingston Jamaica and Honduras; and St. Thomas. Each ad is accompanied with an engraved sailing ship.

The letter is addressed to Messrs. Davidson & Syme Charlotte Street Edinburgh and franked also with a stamped 24 Oct 1834. "COCLK PM" is stamped in 2 sections due to the letter fold.

15 3/4 x 9 3/4"; folds to 7 7/8 x 9 3/4". Wax seal caused small hole affecting some words in manuscript text.

A lovely example of a used letter sheet. unknown

20250Scotland. Undated. Written in ink on both sides of an irregular slip of paper roughly 9 x 19cm with a few words inserted in pencil. Aged and worn. In Guthrie's hand and with 'Dr Guthrie's' in pencil at head of first page. The text comprises the upper part of the first leaf of the draft of a speech of thanks by Guthrie for delivery at a meeting in his honour. Heavily revised with a few interpolations in the margins on both sides. There are no indications that the text has been published and Guthrie's sons' memoir included in his 'Autobiography' 1874 throws up no clues. Containing vivid flashes demonstrating the reasons for Guthrie's popularity as a preacher. The beginning of the speech is on one side of the slip and reads: 'The man who is required to speak about himself has got an awkward subject: and therefore topic of conversation tho' I should have liked to speak my thanks out of the fulness of my heart I think it fortunate that necessity is laid on me to be brief as well as calm - I am well aware how much more I owe the honours & gifts of this day to the kindness of my friends than to any merits of mine – Indeed when I first heard of this movement & in the list of the Committee read the names of some occupying the highest offices in the State & in the Church of England also names famous in the world of Science the names of great & good men belonging to all ranks all political <.> & all Protestant Churches no man cold be <.> sympathy …'. On the reverse of the slip Guthrie expresses 'pleasure in accepting this munificent expression' of his audiences approbation: 'Indeed I feel very much as an invalid does who thinks it almost worthwhile to be ill to be so much made of & have his wants anticipated & know himself loved beyond what he ever imagined – The night brings out the stars: & my being disabled & shelved has elicited expressions of interest & esteem which have greatly alleviated my trial'. In the final part of the text Guthrie addresses 'my Lord Provost our very highly & most deservedly <> Chief Magistrate'. [ Scotland. ] Undated. unknown

1396429 Gilmore Place Edinburgh. 14 August 1820. 1p. 4to. 26 lines closely and neatly written. Good on disbound leaf of aged and worn paper. The letter begins: 'Gentlemen The Patents Models Advertising and plates &c of the engine to which the accompanying descriptions not present refer and which the note in the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal shows how the first trial succeeded has been much more expensive than I calculated on or had any idea of - From the number of enquiries however the chances of a tolerable return are considerable; but like all other things much different from established custom it will require time before it can be known and adopted to reimburse me.' As it would prove expensive to borrow 'by bills at short dates the money that may be still necessary to enable me to appear as the respectable profession of an Engineer requires and also to defray the expence of the further promulgation of the machine' he asks for a loan of £400 with Sir Alexander Jardine Bart. of Applegarth as guarantor. He believes he can 'fill it up by Martinmas 1822'. He concludes: 'I am not known to many in this town and intimate only with three who were schoolfellows of mine and should you wish any reference I have no doubt you will consider the report of any of them above suspicion'. From a collection of papers from the Bank of Scotland. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine carried a report on Dickson's 'patent Water Engine' in its issue for September 1820 praising its 'great convenience' for those who 'wish a small power for useful purposes exercise or amusement'. 29 Gilmore Place, Edinburgh. 14 August 1820. unknown
