181058537<p>broadside 24.7 x 20.8 cms. drop head title as above below that the names of 45 clans and their badges in two columns imprint at foot all inside an attractive double-twist black and white decorative border apparently once pasted on the rear presumably into an album and a few trifling patches of damage and a short closed tear no loss tear from being lifted but overall very good. Attractive. Very rare.</p><p>The only copy located is in National Library of Scotland. Although without place of printing or date the imprint "R. Menzies Printer" was used by the Edinburgh firm of that name between about 1810 and 1820.<br />For each clan is given its name and its wild plant badge. Below the tabel is printed "The Chief of each respective Clan to wear two Eagles Feathers in his Bonnet in addition to the Distinguishing badge of his Clan". This might seem to indicate that this was printed for a particular event possibly a part of the visit of the King to Scotland organized by Sir Walter Scott in 1822.</p> R. Menzies, Printer

First edition of a first-hand account of what is known as the "King's Jaunt" the first visit of a reigning monarch to Scotland since Charles II and the first since the Act of Union in 1707. This work is institutionally rare appearing only in the National Library of Scotland and Princeton. The anonymous author of this work wrote about the excitement and preparation that went into preparing for the king's arrival the lists of Scottish nobility who dined with the king and the trip to Holyrood which is now the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Vertical centrefold crease as issued; light tanning; small creases to bottom corners well clear of the printed surface; old guard mounted on the verso; an excellent copy with ample margins. An attractive map of the shires of Lothian and Linlithgow from the Latin edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius-Jansson atlas 'Atlas Novus sive Descriptio Geographica Totius Orbis Terrarum' 1636-1638 following the pioneering surveys of Scottish cartographer Timothy Pont. <p>It was first published in Hondius' 1630 edition of Mercator's atlas with the imprint giving credit to Hendrik's father Joost de Hondt: 'Jodocus Hondius caelavit sumptibus Andrae Hart'. Interestingly the plate was likely engraved as early as 1603 which would explains the imprint and the dedication to James I and VI. Henricus Hondius and Jan Janssonius unknown

5554WORLD WAR II IN SCOTLAND. ALS. 6pgs. October 5 1940. Drummakill Alexandria Dunbartonshire. An autograph letter signed Hector and written during World War Two. The author discusses hosting evacuated children and the fact that Scotland has so far been lucky in avoiding air raids. Our first lot of 3 boys are no longer with us. One of them the nicest lad died last Xmas from appendicitis the other two took themselves off to a farm as they objected to being kept in order! But lately I hear they returned home to Clydebank. Whether we get others depends on the severity of air raids! So far Scotland has really been lucky in this respect. Of course there are some here & there. We hear the hum sometimes usually at night and have heard bombs exploding but quite a bit away! But you never can tell when it might not be a bigger affair!! It is wonderful how England is standing up to her ordeal & the amazing cheerfulness of people with it all. I have a cousin & her husband in London & she writes now & then saying that life is noisy in London! But she manages to do a lot of war work often taking it to their air raid shelter. But I believe people get used even to the sound of many guns!. Clydebank where the two remaining boys had returned home would suffer a deadly blitz the following year. In fine condition and including the original mailing envelope sent to Chevy Chase Maryland. unknown
