23918Victorian photographic print of illustration ‘signed’ ‘Kate Kennedy pinxit / 1871’. The tradition of this annual day of revels at Scotland's oldest university St Andrews is said to date back to the fifteenth century and is said to commemorate the visits of a lady Katharine Kennedy to her uncle Bishop Kennedy of St Andrews every Spring. 9 x 5 cm sepia photographic print of illustration laid down on 10.5 x 6 cm piece of card and clearly made in the nineteenth century. In fair condition lightly aged. As part of the print at bottom right: ‘Kate Kennedy pinxit / 1871’. On reverse in pencil: ‘D of Fa / K K Day / St A Professors / J S Mill’ The photograph is of a drawing of eight middle-aged men presumably St Andrews professors dancing and playing musical instruments in a semi-circle around a ninth dressed as a tumbler and standing on his head. Each of the heads in the illustration is a cut-out from a photographic portrait laid down on the page and drawn around. The last figure on the left is a skeleton and the last on the right crouching and playing a drum has a serpent’s tail. See image. A very scarce report carried by the Education Commission of Scotland with a series of statistics collected under instructions from Her Majesty's Commissioners. Bound in full calf with stamped gilt 'For Vice-President's Room' to the front board. The statistics list the natures of the schools' buildings the population of students as well as other general remarks. The need for this information would have derived from the state of education at the time in Scotland which was still facing problems of quality and the general number of children that were receiving insufficient environments of learning. This report alongside the Argyll Commission that was implemented the year after in 1866 ultimately led to support for widespread reform. In full calf binding with 'For Vice-President's Room' stamped in gilt to the front board. Externally sound. With heavy rubbing to the extremities resulting in losses of leather. With amateur tape reinforcements made to the spine and front hinge. Marks tot he boards. Internally firmly bound. The family of Andrew Stuart 1725-1801 of Torrance was related to the Harington baronets through the marriage in 1830 of Charlotte Stuart to Robert Harington younger son of Sir John Edward Harington 8th Baronet.
