The first paragraph reads: 'I know enough of <bu>siness never to put off acknowledging receipt of money - I got your kind letter this morning with the enclosure - You are more considerate than many people for which I send you my best thanks.' The second paragraph relates to 'Derby's Bill' which Hanbury has 'recycled' and concerning which Guthrie asks 'What next & next' Guthrie's entry in the Oxford DNB describes him as 'one of the greatest of Free Church leaders'. Internally bright and clean. Toning/offsetting to flyleaves gentle spotting to front and rear blanks as well as textblock edges. Bindings largely clean some gentle marking to boards including some red marking to top of vol IV. Four volumes of a periodical issued by the Theosophical Society in Scotland to document the history and presence of Scottish theosophists. Theosophy is an esoteric practice arising in the 19th century that sought to fuse Eastern and Western thought into a creed that supports all religious and mystical beliefs. These four volumes cover all Scottish lodges key figures and key events - starting from around 1910 with volume IV covering up to mid-1914. Includes dissertations on the life and writings of James I the Scots language and Scottish music. Much of the book is taken up with his best-known poem the King's Quair nearly 1400 lines which was "composed by him while he was a prisoner in the castle of Windsor upon the Lady Jane a princess of the blood royal of England to whom he was afterwards espoused" preface. The boards on the book are slight and appear recycled. John Price notes that his copy in boards reuses "discarded leaves for a temporary binding. printed by Crerar and Son unknown
