Slipcase repaired and lined with cloth. An extraordinary Victorian Book of Common Prayer in an unusually nice contemporary velvet and metal binding with clasps. A variant imprint of Griffiths 1863/22. Bound in full black morocco by Larkins with marbled endpapers and triple gilt ruled covers. All page edges gilt. Gilt dentelles. Spine with six compartments separated by gilt ruled raised bands. One compartment with gilt title "Queen Elizabeth's Book of Common Prayer" and the remaining compartments decorated with gilt floral motifs. Interestingly three of the plates are of a more political nature being the "Gun-Powder Treason" the "Martyrdom of King Charles I" and the "Restoration of King Charles II." Red ruling to the borders of the double-columned text title pages and plates. The Whole Book of Psalms Collected into English Metre by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others . 'Printed by J. Heptinstall for the Company of Stationers. 1707" is not found in the ESTC. Neither text is paginated; the final leaf of the Book of Common Prayer is R4; the final leaf of The Whole Book of Psalms is I6. Front hinge reinforced with Japanese tissue. Kent 1851-1924 architect and civil engineer of Woonsocket and Narragansett Pier Rhode Island who conducted business as Secretary of the Association from his Rhode Island home. These copies of his letters are in a "Tokio" Letter Copying Book. Discoveries by Koch and Pasteur on health hazards caused by bacteria led to actions to provide a supply of clean healthy water in municipalities throughout America. In the years covered by these letters there was a strong active organization of New England water engineers and large-scale projects in Boston Providence and other cities to secure safe water. "Their persons and their lives are left totally to the absolute control of their masters." Reports are presented on Slavery in the District of Columbia the progress or lack thereof of the anti-slavery cause the Slave Trade with many examples of the horrors of Slavery. The Book of Common Prayer is an Anglican liturgical text that comprises services and prayers for important occasions in life: baptism marriage death illness and childbirth. Books of Common prayer emerged out of the English Reformation as England's break with the Catholic Church inaugurated vernacular worship. Books of common prayers enabled lay people to establish a more direct connection with God. The present copy contains ink and pencil inscriptions that attest to its use as a devotional object if not a text for deep study.
