As to the presidential campaign the authors say "President Van Buren and General Harrison have both publicly taken the side of the oppressor against the oppressed and the God of the oppressed. Le premier ouvrage de Hutcheson dans lequel le père des Lumières écossaises, développe la théorie du "sens moral" dont la postérité fut considérable. La traduction serait due à l'encyclopédiste Marc-Antoine Eidous ou à Guillaume Laget. L'oeuvre de philosophie morale et esthétique d'Hutcheson, précurseur de l’utilitarisme, exerça une influence déterminante, notamment sur Hume, Thomas Reid, Kant ou Adam Smith dont il fut le professeur. Victor Cousin releva que la publication de cet ouvrage avait marqué "l’avènement de l’esthétique dans la philosophie européenne". "Généralement cité pour mémoire, Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) mérite d'être lu dans le texte. La question de la nature et des rapports du Beau, du Bien, du Vrai et du Juste se pose à lui dans un contexte renouvelé (…). Identifier, au coeur de la vertu, la spécificité du sens et du sensible face aux calculs de la raison, telle est la tâche qu'il s'est assignée. Als die Familie zunehmend unter finanziellem Druck geriet, bot sie an, die Bibliothek einschließlich der Sammlung von illuminierten Manuskripten in den 1890er Jahren für 160.000 Pfund an die Nation zu verkaufen. Der Deal wurde nicht abgeschlossen, und die Bücher wurden in den nächsten Jahren stückweise für insgesamt 228.000 Pfund verkauft.
