The work called for European rulers to unite against the new English republic and place Prince Charles on the throne. This work represents a reversal of Salmasius earlier views since it supported the divine origin of kingship defended the powers of a king and blamed the attacks of the Revolution on the English people. Salmasius studied at Paris 1604-06 and at Heidelberg 1606-09. During his years at Heidelberg he discovered the Palatine manuscript of the Greek Anthology. In 1610 his commentary on Solinus Polyhistor was published. His enormous learning especially in ancient languages- he was fluent in Hebrew Arabic Syriac Persian and Coptic as well as Greek and Latin- led to offers from several universities. In 1631 he became professor at Leiden and stayed there for the remainder of his life except for one year 1650-51 at the Swedish court where he was a guest due to the fame his Defensio Regia pro Carolo I had brought him. He returned to Leiden soon after the publication of Miltons reply Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio in 1651. [B. & A. Elzevir] hardcover
1891102535London: Eyre & Spottiswoode and C. J. Clay and Sons 1891. Hardcover. Very Good. 564 p. Rebound in full cloth with spine and cover material saved. Bookplate at front. Foxing on endpapers. Pages untrimmed.

This particular volume comes from the library of Sir Archibald Hamilton Dunbar Baronet of Northfield Justice of the Peace and Captain of H. M. 66th regiment of the 8th battalion. This facsimile is of the revised manuscript of 1636. One note of curiosity is that the page numbering does not count blank pages. Thus when one blank page is skipped such as after p. 44 which side of the leaf is even or odd switches a result of its nature as a manuscript. Eyre & Spottiswoode and C. J. Clay and Sons hardcover

Text in Spanish translated from the French. 18th-century Spanish vellum ms. title to spine Jacobo 2o; lacking ties but internally clean and bright.

Spanish imprint of the biography of James II of England published during the last of the Jacobite uprisings. Forced out of power in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and defeated in the subsequent battle of the Boyne by William of Orange the short reign of James II has an importance that reaches far beyond his three years in power. He died in 1701 in exile at the Palace of St. Germain in France and remains to be one of the most complex and intriguing persons of history. An ardent Roman Catholic his efforts to return England to the Catholic faith continue to resonate to this day in Northern Ireland. The Jacobite uprisings were a series of rebellions and wars in Great Britain and Ireland occurring from 1688 to 1746. The aim of the later uprisings was to return the House of Stuart and the descendants of James II to the throne of Great Britain after being deposed by Parliament during the Glorious Revolution. This biography of James II was printed in the last year of the major Jacobite uprising known as the The Forty Five. It was an intense time to show partisanship and effectively Jacobitism ended here as a serious political force in Britain. Not commonly found in such good original condition. por Antonio Marin hardcover

183933043Boston: New England Female Moral Reform Society 1839. Very Good. Boston: New England Female Moral Reform Society 1839. First Edition. Octavo; self-wrappers unopened. 16pp. Toning and creasing to edges with a few minor nicks; about Very Good.

The New England Female Moral Reform Society's stated goal was the "prevention of licentiousness" prostitution the moral double standard regarding both and protecting young women from the "unprincipled destroyer who seduce and ruin the unsuspecting." Indeed this issue devotes a section to "Street Beggars" who are imposters attempting to lead astray the young and unsuspecting. The paper continues in telling the story of two young women who were led to "a house of ill fame" by one such imposter and were saved from a member of the society and thus saved "from this sink of iniquity. from her 'whose house is the way to hell going down to the chambers of death.'"

Also of note here is the ongoing "Letters to Sarah E. Grimke" portion of this publication which runs several pages in this issue gently arguing several points regarding the role of women in society. The letter concludes with a post script that the author has just received Grimke's pamphlet "Equality of the Sexes" acknowledges her sincere obligations and urges everyone who reads this publication to also read Grimke's.
