The author Henry Grove (1684-1738) was an English nonconformist minister, theologian and dissenting tutor. The preface and the concluding chapters were contributed by Amory himself. In his preface he informs us that Grove used his manuscript for over thirty years in instructing youth. On his deathbed he charged Amory to ensure its publication. On this important essay on moral philosophy, in which the authors criticise the systems of Grotius, Puffendorf, Hobbes, Berkeley, Clarke, Gibson, Locke, Turnbull, Wollaston, Descartes, etc., see Alan P. Première et unique édition française, dans la traduction et avec dédicace de Joseph-Dominique Rauquil-Lieutaud (1756-1793) adressée à l'épouse de l'auteur. 1er baron Lyttelton (1709-1773), homme d'État whig anglais et homme de lettres, mécène littéraire et était le fils d'une famille whig éminente et fut très tôt un associé politique de son beau-frère, William Pitt dans le cercle dit des Boy Patriot, qui s'opposait au ministère de Robert Walpole. Élu à la Chambre des communes en 1735, il occupa d'importantes fonctions. Ces lettres s'adressent aux principales personnalités politiques et littéraires de son temps. Le traducteur, Benjamin Laroche, ami de l'abbé Grégoire, militant anti-esclavagiste, avait dû s'exiler en Angleterre pour son opposition à la politique ultra des Bourbons. Il soumet les recherches d'Henry Parnell sur le crédit, les finances publiques, l'industrie et le commerce à la sagacité de ses contemporains français, aux "gouvernants comme aux gouvernés". Selon Adolphe Blanqui ("Hist. de l'éco politique", Bibliographie): "vaste et savante revue des institutions économiques de l'Angleterre, par un homme qui les connaît bien. Cette satire visait principalement le puritanisme, les presbytériens ainsi que certaines autres factions impliquées dans la Première révolution anglaise. Le texte est divisé en trois parties, respectivement écrites en 1663, 1664 et 1678. Publié anonymement à peine quatre ans après le début de la Restauration anglaise et le retour de Charles II d'Angleterre, le poème trouva un large succès auprès du public. Le point de vue est loin d'être neutre, puisque Butler était un fervent royaliste : seul le parti parlementaire est tourné en ridicule.
