1928035356Lewis Historical Publishing Co.: 1928. 4 Volumes illustrated in b&w. Volume I & II 993 pages. Volume III: 477 pages. Volume IV: 232 pages. "Several histories of Maine have been published in the past but practically all of these have concerned themselves chiefly with the history of the State settlement with the events of the colonial period with Maine's separation from Massachusetts and with its political history since it achieved Statehood in 1820. Though naturally all of these topics are of great interest and a detailed account of them is of much historical value the editors of this present work felt that the time has arrived to prepare a history of Maine that would deal mainly with a review of the accomplishments of the State and of its citizens with a description of its many and extensive resources and their development." 4 HARDCOVERS FINE TO FINE- HARDCOVERS.: . 1822976Y28London: Sir Richard Phillips and Co. 1822. First edition. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". None. The first UK edition of these unfavourable letters discussing England from American writer James Kirke Paulding. The first UK edition of this work. Smartly rebound in quarter calf with red cloth boards. Though published here anonymously under "A New England Man" these writings are credited to James Kirke Paulding an American writer and for a time the United States Secretary of the Navy. Comprising twenty-three "letters" this work was one of several responses from American writers to the unfavourable accounts given by English writers on their visits to the new nation. This reply retorts satirical criticisms of English customs and social behaviours and is one of five works Paulding wrote expressing his anti-British views. Bound in quarter calf with cloth boards. With renewed endpapers. Externally very smart with a couple marks to the boards and minor rubbing to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional spots. Very Good Indeed Sir Richard Phillips and Co. hardcover
