M.DCC.LI. 8vo unpaginated a-b8 c3 A-Aa8 final leaf Aa8: one tailpiece; A-H8 final leaf H8; extra-illustrated: engraved title page and frontispiece of George II plus 45 engraved plates presented out of sequence. Later full black morocco spine and upper board gilt-ruled and faded spine simply and scantly tooled in gilt gilt roll-tooled edges and turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. Heavy wear and rubbing scored and bumped circular marks to upper board. Gatherings not flush only traces of earlier gilt edge stain from second/ later binder's trimming. Off-setting from book label now removed to front endpapers. Later affectionate gift POI in brown ink to second blank: "To Dorothy with love from Phyllis" with earlier POI again in brown ink repeated to illustrated title page and Contents page: "Jas. Nunn Chalck." Browned some foxing and staining losses to bottom corner of A2 with 4 lines of text absent and top corner of A7 some tears nicking and creasing a number of margins trimmed very close with headers and catchwords affected incl. gathering I L & X plus B in second work leaves P3 & 4 taped at centre fold with attendant offsetting to adjacent pages. Else complete and clean. Good A well-handled extra-illustrated copy of the 1752 OUP Book of Common Prayer bound with Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins et al's The Whole Book of Psalms 1751 featuring 47 biblical and historical plates including 'Gunpowder Treason' 'The Martyrdom of King Charles the 1st' and 'The Restoration of Charles 2nd'. N.B. Diverges from ESTC T183438: shares format title imprint and date though in Arabic rather than Roman numerals on title page but lacks a price on title page c.f. One Shilling and its final leaf of the first work is Aa8 rather than H3. A fascinating provincial early 19th century edition of this classic work of Anglican prayer with an engraved frontispiece. The Book of Common Prayer published in the civil parish of Burslem Stoke on Trent in the early 19th century by John Tregortha.Tregortha was a major figure in the book trade of the region and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.Rebacked retaining the original calf boards and endpapers.Extensive former owner's inscriptions to front pastedown and free endpaper of individuals including Jane Hood Swann George Swann Mary Hood William Hood and Ann and George Swann.To the rear of the work are 'A Companion to the Altar' and 'A New Version of the Psalms of David' with individual title pages. Rebacked retaining the original calf boards and endpapers. Externally excellent. Hinges reinforced. Inscriptions to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. "Nouvelle édition, revue & corrigée", parue un an après l'originale de cet ouvrage présenté comme une traduction de l’anglais, mais en fait œuvre en propre de l’abbé J.-B. Dubos L'auteur exhorte Angleterre à rester en dehors de la guerre de succession d'Espagne, à développer sa marine et à favoriser ses échanges commerciaux. Il analyse en détail les routes et marchandises échangées entre l’Angleterre et le reste du monde (Espagne et Portugal, Amérique, Guinée, France et Pays-Bas, Allemagne et Hollande, Méditerranée, etc.) en appuyant son analyse sur des statistiques chiffrées. L’ouvrage est célèbre pour prophétiser que les colonies britanniques d’Amérique se révolteraient un jour contre leur maître et acquérir leur indépendance. Historien, diplomate et habile négociateur, Dubos prit une part importante aux négociations de plusieurs traités de la période.
