An attractive collection of 25 published albumen photographs of London photographed and published by the London Stereoscope company. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the front board. There is some bumping and water staining to the front board particularly. The title page and some page edges are a little foxed but the images themselves are in very good condition. The pages are each bound in album style. This is weak in parts and has been reinforced but overall is sound. images are 13.5 x 21 cm each. The usual London landmarks are all represented on streets which seem very empty to the modern eye and populated by pedestrians horses and carriages. Album is 300 by 220mm 11¾ by 8¾ inches. . The fourteenth volume of the London and Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine; notable for containing within its June issue the first printed notice of Anglo- American chemist and educator John William Draper's 1811-1882 successful attempt at producing daguerreotype portraits. 'Professor Draper of the University of New York informs us in a note dated March 31st that he has succeeded during the winter in procuring portraits by the Daguerrotype and that they have all the beauty and softness of the most finished mezzotint engraving and only require from 20 to 45 second for execution'. A pioneer of early photography Draper having learnt of Daguerre's revolutionary photochemical process in December 1839 successfully produced one of the first intentional portraits of an individual. An image of his sister Dorothy taken at this time remains the earliest extant photographic portrait. The sixteen 'Boy's Own Moving Panoramas' and descriptions listed include the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and the Epsom Races and 'The Little Toymaker' with Magic Donkeys' 'Magic Sailor and Bonny Fishwife' and the dubiously title 'Magic Nigger and how to make it.' . On the inside of the back cover is an advertisement for 'Holloway's Ointment' guaranteed remedy for 'Bad Legs Bad Breasts Ulcers Abscesses Wounds and Sores of all Kinds.' and on the back cover a list of 'Clarke's Galanty Shows Ready for Acting.' </p> London: H.G. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 90 PLATES most protected by tissue guards. Spines just slightly sunned occasional light offsetting from plates a handful of plates with mild foxing but a fine copy extremely fresh and quite clean in an unworn extremely lustrous binding.<br/> <br/> Extra-illustrated and attractively bound this is an appealing copy of John Doran's vignettes of 19th century London life and the theatre. A prolific writer of Irish origin Doran 1807-78 worked as a private tutor then became a full-time author and journalist editing the "Church and State Gazette" and the "Atheneum." He produced many works usually historical biographies but also wrote extensively about the theatre a lifelong passion. He had tried his hand at playwriting as a young man and writes about the subject here with all the enthusiasm of a confirmed playgoer. The present volume is made up of essays nearly all originally published in the "Temple Bar Magazine" to which Doran regularly contributed. This periodical which ran from 1860 to 1906 was a leading literary magazine of the day publishing works by Wilkie Collins Arthur Conan Doyle Anthony Trollope and Robert Louis Stevenson among others. In our two handsome volumes here the editors have collected Doran's pieces about the theatre as the title suggests but also historical vignettes biographical sketches and commentaries on modern life and his own experiences told as the introduction puts it "with a sprightly wit." The present copy is enriched with a large number of attractive plates primarily portraits depicting figures discussed from actors to nobility together with occasional illustrations of unusual scenes and events such as Lord Nelson's funeral carriage.
