18907243Jerusalem Palestine: Printed at the London Jews' Society's House of Industry Jerusalem N.D. Circa 1890's. First Edition. Hardcover. Unpaginated fourteen unnumbered leaves. Oblong 12mo. measuring 12 x 18 cm. Original quarter maroon leather over gorgeous polished bevelled olive-wood boards bearing "Jerusalem" in black atop a deeply carved Jerusalem cross to the front board; like carving to the rear boards with Jerusalem printed in Hebrew characters to the centre; marbled edges and ivory silk-moire endpapers. Comprises of eleven beautifully arranged dried flower specimens mounted on stiff leaves most excepting two accompanied with their original remarkably well-preserved tissue-guards and individually captioned with their respective geographic origins e.g.: "Flowers from Mount Zion" "Flowers from the Mount of Olives" etc. Lightest wear to the leather spine else no other flaws noted to the extremities. Faint toning to the title page otherwise contents remain near-uniformly without blemish and with firm sound binding. A most lovely and unique period offering from the Holy Land. Rare to be offered in commerce in this edition and state. This edition unrecorded in WorldCat however nominally corresponds to OCLC #753636624 with notable differences in pagination and the number of specimens. See also OCLC #698494522. Rare indeed. <br/><br/>¶ Title leaf cites Biblical verse Matt. VI 28 29 30 which reads in part: "28 Why are you anxious about clothes Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. 29 But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 30 If God so clothes the grass of the field which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow will he not much more provide for you O you of little faith" Although no author nor compiler is given within the present offering corresponds to other similar such works attributed to German missionary and cabinet-maker Ferdinand Vester see references above who had moved to Jerusalem in 1853 to join the Swiss-German Mission. Accordingly the present work may have been the result of his collaboration with the efforts of the London Jews' Society's' "House of Industry" an Anglican missionary society located at Christ Church Jerusalem which offered vocational training to Jewish boys in various trades such as carpentry turnery shoemaking etc. The products produced by these boys would in-turn be sold to other missionaries or as religious souvenirs to passing tourists or those migrating to the West. Vester's son Frederick would carry on his father's business later marrying Bertha Spafford herself the daughter of the founder of the American Colony in Jerusalem Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. An attractive collection of 25 published albumen photographs of London photographed and published by the London Stereoscope company. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the front board. There is some bumping and water staining to the front board particularly. The title page and some page edges are a little foxed but the images themselves are in very good condition. The pages are each bound in album style. This is weak in parts and has been reinforced but overall is sound. images are 13.5 x 21 cm each. The usual London landmarks are all represented on streets which seem very empty to the modern eye and populated by pedestrians horses and carriages. Album is 300 by 220mm 11¾ by 8¾ inches. . Une collection attrayante de 25 photographies à l'albumine de Londres photographiées et publiées par la London Stereoscope company. Original en tissu rouge avec des titres dorés sur le panneau avant. Il y a quelques bosses et des taches d'eau sur le panneau avant en particulier. La page de titre et certains bords de page sont un peu roussis mais les images elles-mêmes sont en très bon état. Les pages sont reliées dans le style d'un album. Les images mesurent 135 x 21 cm chacune. George Rennie provides scientific and historical notices of the two bridges practical observations of the tides of the River Thames and a concise essay on bridges from the earliest period &c. &c. The plates depict the old London Bridge before and during the demolition process and the new London Bridge during and after its erection which happened alongside. They are highly finished and full of interest.Period binding of quarter brown polished calf with gilt decoration to spine cloth sides red morocco title label on front stamped in gilt. Foxing to first blank leaf and a bit of light foxing to the plates. Some scratching to rear cover. Covers rubbed at spine and corners. Very good the plates being very good indeed. Three quarter leather bound covers with brown stain covers are frayed at corners and spine caps with two missing spine strips and 3 of the 6 boards are detached but all present. Boards and spines are straight. Bindings are tight. Marbled end sheets and paste down clean and vibrant. Text pages are barely toned largely free of foxing with only very sparse modest soiling and overall in very good condition. Plates range from being untoned to light toning and from being completely free of foxing to moderate foxing although those with moderate foxing tends to be more in the margin areas. The plates are overall in very good condition. Volume 4: complete with 53 plates one being an extra also labeled plate VII but not identical several of which are folding plates and 2 of which are handcolored. Volume 5: complete with 69 plates 2 of which are double page. Volume 6: unknown how many plates are called for but present are a total of 14 plates as follows 2 b&w partial page plates within a text page 4 full page b&w one has very heavy foxing and 8 handcolored plates. These volumes are excellent candidates for rebinding with new covers as the page bindings are solid and condition of the contents overall in very good condition. . . Some plates with marginal dampstains and brownspotting - an overall nice set. 290 engraved plates complete. <br/><br/><em>First edition of this monumental work published by the Society of Antiquaries of London SAL containing plates depicting ancient monuments buildings sites and artefacts primarily British. The society defined its agenda in terms of preservation visual documentation and collecting but occasionally also broke new ground; vol. 2 containing one of the very earliest printed depictions of the Rosetta Stone including classical scholar Richard Porson’s work on the missing lower right corner of the Greek text. Vetusta Monumenta published in seven volumes between 1747 and 1906 – with the first five volumes offered here - was the first of four major publication series launched by SAL in the eighteenth century. The first four plates were published individually in 1718 at the Mitre Tavern. By 1747 seventy engravings had been published enough to form a substantial volume. The same year John Ward 1679-1758 became director of the SAL. Ward had begun writing long explanatory captions for some of the plates beginning in 1743 and these soon evolved into printed companion essays in either Latin or English which appeared occasionally from 1744. The second volume with 55 more plates appeared in 1789. It was greatly expanded by these letterpress explanations of the plates which had begun to appear not just occasionally but with every plate or plate set and consistently in English from 1763. The fourth volume was published in 1815 with 52 plates and the fifth was published in 1835 with 69 plates. </em> hardcover
