1906cfe20027U.S.A.: Grosset & Dunlap 1906. 5th or later Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Charles Edward Hooper. This is a 12th printing 1906 by Grosset & Dunlap--authorized reprint through MacMillan from the original printing in 1903. This copy is signed by Jack London on the title page--dated 1912 and "Glen Ellen Calif". This copy is also signed twice by noted author and hypnotist "From Dick Sutphen with "Defiance Oct 13 1906" on the half title page and again on the Chapter I heading "Into The Primitive". It is not known why the date of 1906 was used by Sutphen--that date is before Jack London signed this copy--unless it has some kind of past life reference by Sutphen--In addition there is also a signature on the same Chapter I title page of Vin Moore--Vin Moore was an American film director actor and writer- who directed 83 films between 1915 and 1938. Although Sutphen wasn't born until 1937--he was connected to Jack London through London's novel "The Star Rover" which dealt with self-hypnosis and reincarnation. Sutphen wrote a new epilogue for the 1987 reprint edition of London's "The Star Rover" and claimed to have had a past life connection to the character Ed Morrell. Sutphen wrote the bestseller "You Were Born Again To Be Together"--and wrote 21 books for Simon & Schuster as well as appearing on many TV shows. This may have been Dick Sutphen's personal copy--although not known when purchased at auction. This copy is in "Good" condition--tight and unmarked interior with moderate toning to the green cloth--especially to the spine where the letters are mostly unreadable and the front panel where the depiction of John Thornton and Buck is unfortunately very hard to visualize.

Grosset & Dunlap hardcover
198316339JSanta Barbara: Neville 1983. First Edition. Of an edition of 326 copies this copy is in the binding of the 26 deluxe lettered copies which were bound in full gilt-stamped brown morocco leather each containing an original check filled out and signed by Jack London. This special extra copy belonged to the famous rare book collector and dealer John McLaughlin of The Book Sail in Orange California. One of the first collectors to recognize the importance of popular culture McLaughlin gathered a fabled collection of material. His 1984 landmark rare book and manuscript catalogue The Undead - The Book Sail - 16th Anniversary Catalogue contained an amazing amount of terrific material including Bram Stoker’s original manuscript for Dracula. The printed colophon has John McLaughlin’s name written in attractive calligraphy. The check is especially desirable as it is a printed The Merchants Bank of San Francisco check made out to Cash dated November 9 1914 and signed in full by London in the amount of $200.00. A particularly excellent example with Jack London’s signature bold and clear. This book has three Jack London stories of the Klondike published in book form for the first time. Two of the stories have not printed before this book. Fine condition. Neville hardcover

19099234London: Johnson Riddle & Co Ltd 1909. Green-bordered 'common design' Underground map tipped into Cooks Handbook for London 22 x 27 cm printed in colours with green border trimmed by the publisher as usual where tabbed into the book and with a tiny tear without loss where it has been opened blank verso; publishers crease to bottom left corner. The earliest versions of this map advertised the Franco-British Exhibition which closed at the end of October 1908 marked here as Exhibition. In all other respects the map conforms to the smaller of the two maps shown on page 50 of Leboff and Demuths No Need to Ask. Bishopsgate shown on our map was renamed Liverpool Street in November 1909. The map in both sizes represents a significant advance towards the issuing of passenger maps in a convenient format but it is also a record of the extensive development of deep-level lines in the Edwardian period and a highly significant advance cartographically in terms of colour coding the lines and granting them equal weighting. At this point only four of the lines shown were under the umbrella of the UERL Underground Electric Railways Company of London Ltd a precursor of London Transport the others remained independent. However no distinctions are made on the map - which makes it easier to read including where to change trains to complete a journey. Most earlier maps prioritised the line of the issuing company but passengers were now enouraged to view the Underground as an integrated network. The Underground logo in the upper border is an early exercise in branding. This example is still tipped into the 1909 edition of Cooks Handbook facing the contents page vii a 212 page guide bound into flexible brown cloth covers blocked in black and gilt and also containing a folding b/w map of central London. For much of the 20th Century London Transport and its predecessors seem to have been happy to distribute quantities of the official map at no charge or a minimal one to commercial publishers to be bound into guide books. Presumably it was seen as free advertising. Some were the standard issue with text on the verso as distributed to passengers; some were the normal issue but supplied flat and folded differently to fit the format of the book; some as here were special guide book issues supplied with a blank verso. Many have been removed from their original context over time and it is interesting to note the range of publishers who were able to obtain supplies of maps. Map Johnson, Riddle & Co, Ltd hardcover
1909List1921London 1909. Silver gelatin prints measuring 5 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Editorial marks to verso one marginal tear else about fine with fine contrast very good plus overall. Fine. Western shows particularly Buffalo Bill’s which ran in Earls Court for several years were highly influential in introducing the British public to American Indian culture often in highly fictionalized form. After the Buffalo Bill show ceased performing in London others followed including the The Golden West and American U.S.A. industries exhibition of 1909. Offered here are three photographs of American Indian children from the exhibition who were likely part of the show’s ‘Red Man Spectacle.†They are likely Oglala. The show featured a reenactment of an entirely fictitious event called the “Black Hawk Massacre in Colorado†and some veterans of Cody’s shows including Red Shirt Lone Bear and Painted Horse were among the performers. The three children pictured here are named Little Holy Flower Hold His Hand and Come in Camp. A note to a verso says the pictures were taken concurrently with the Franco-British Exposition which continued for several years in various iterations beginning in 1908. We find one variant image from this shoot otherwise no record of these images which may have been taken by the Brown Brothers firm or possibly ended up in their possession from another photographer. unknown

130267Very Good. Two albumen paper photographs each 280 × 372 mm on the original card mounts each approximately 405 × 485 mm. Mounts uniformly tanned and lightly marked; trifling surface loss to silverfish to one plate confined mainly to the blank upper portion where it is inconspicuous; tiny blemishes near the top corners of the second plate; overall in excellent condition. The first image shows 665 'Lord of the Isles' a Problem class or Lady of the Lake class passenger locomotive. Clearly visible on the wheel arch is its build date 'Jany 1863'. The second image shows 2146 a DX Goods class locomotive. Both locomotives are shown in 'photographic grey' livery without tender and it is likely that these are official photographs for London and North Western Railway or the Crewe Works.
Both models were designed by John Ramsbottom and entered service in the late 1850s. However these examples are fitted with cabs suggesting that the photographs were taken after the appointment of his successor Francis Webb in 1871.
