A propaganda publication of the Ministry of Information aimed at shoring up domestic morale illustrated throughout with photographs including powerful images of nightime bombing raids taken by Daily Mirror photographer George Greenwell. This copy has been inscribed on the front flyleaf to the American writer and navy lieutenant John Mason Brown by Stella Reading. Born Stella Isaacs 1894-1971 she was Marchioness of Reading and founder in 1938 of the Women's Voluntary Service a nationwide network of women working in civil defense and aiding in evacuations from target areas of German bombing. In 1941 she was named Dame Commander of the British Empire and she became the first woman to sit in the House of Lords. His Majesty's Stationery Office unknown
