4555Dated in facsimile October 1899. Sambourne 1844-1910 contributed illustrations to Punch for more than forty years. On good laid paper dimensions roughly 22 inches by 17 1/2. With facsimile signature and date. Folded twice. Slightly discoloured and a little creased but suitable for framing. Depicts Mr Punch with his dog Toby sitting atop a pile of the 'evolutions of the century' including a bicycle and typewriter and waving to 116 of the century's worthies including Bismark General Tom Thumb and the jockey Fred Archer but without Karl Marx. In fair condition: worn particularly the first two leaves and aged. A marvellous collection described in a carefully printed and compiled catalogue of 901 lots. A two-page 'Prefatory Note' has a long quotation from one of Meynell's catalogues beginning: 'My books must at my death be turned to account. What I have to fear and what I hereby forbid is that they should be offered as a whole to some insensitive dealer who judges a collection by its bindings its look of prosperity the presence of those standard 'rarities' that are to be had from every expensive bookseller and found in every wealthy man's library.' Following the quotation Bumpus i.e. Wilson points out that 'Into a large number of entries in this list have been introduced the phrases by which Everard Meynell characterised the book in question in his own notes of his stock and library.' Divided into two roughly equal parts: 'Books written before 1800' and 'Books Mss. and Letters written after 1800'. The latter include sections of Browning Coleridge Coventry Patmore and Rossetti associations. There are also long descriptions of a number of AlsS to Patmore: nine from Robert Bridges £25; three from Robert Browning and his wife eighteen guineas; five from Thomas Carlyle £70; Gerard Manley Hopkins lots 651 to 655; Francis Thompson lots 880 to 882; Tennyson lots 864 and 865; and six letters from Lady Tennyson to Mrs Patmore eight guineas. Among the single letters offered are items by Mary Shelley ten guineas and Robert Louis Stevenson £65. Scarce: only two copies on OCLC WorldCat. In fair condition aged and worn having been used to wrap up items and with the following in manuscript on reverse: 'No. 1. Vouchers recd. of Mr. Gabell'. The text begins: 'Notice is hereby given that by the Acts of 48 Geo. III. Cap. 55. and 52 Geo. III. Cap. 93. every Person who intends to use or shall use any Dog Gun Net or other Engine for the Purpose of taking or killing any Game whatever or any Woodcock Snipe Quail or Landrail or any Conies or shall take or kill or shall assist in the taking or killing any Game or any Woodcock Snipe Quail or Landrail or any Conies must before he shall so take or kill or assist in the taking or killing the same subject to the Provisions in an Act passed in the 54th Year of the Reign of His present Majesty Cap. 141 annually pay the Duties imposed by the said Acts to one of the Collectors of the Assessed Taxes for the Parish in which he resides who will give a printed Receipt for the same which Receipt is to be exchanged for a Certificate to be signed by the Clerk to the Commissioners for the District.' Records a payment of £12 10s 0d to the 'Ministers and Elders Of the French Church of St Martin Orgars of London as Assigned by Margin' and signed at foot by 'James Eynard Minister' 'David Durand Minister' and elders 'Jno Bonnet' 'Matthew Clarmont' 'Philip Rigail' and 'Peter De Visme junr'. Note from Wikipedia: "St Martin Orgar was a church in the City of London in Martin Lane off Cannon Street most famous as being one of the churches mentioned in the nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons". Most of the building was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 but the tower and part of the nave were left standing.1 The parish was merged with St Clement Eastcheap. The certificate has been made out in order to enroll 'Dorothy Marion Cameron Bower' into 'Detachment 8 in the County of Westmorland' but has not been signed by her. The first page carries the conditions of use the second a declaration by the signatory and the third the permit itself with facsimile signatures of Arthur Stanley Chairman and Louis Pearson Hon. Secretary and the actual signatures of Henry Gandy County Director and John Mason M.D Commandant. The last page is for renewal stamps. Headed: 'J. V. A. D. 24. | Joint V.A.D. 26589'at the St James' Theatre kindly lent by Mr. George Alexander On Friday June 7th 1907 at 3 p.m.'. 4pp. folio. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged paper slightly worn at head. The front page is headed 'H.R.H. Princess Christian and the Royal Members are Patrons of a Private Farewell Matinee arrranged by Lady Romney on behalf of the Green Park Club for Mr. and Mrs. Luther Munday'. The names of twenty performers are listed beneath this headed by Herbert Beerbohm Tree with various other individuals named. The central two pages form a single arrangement of dozens of facsimile signatures beneath the following message from the Countess of Romney as President of the Green Room Club: 'Names are the beads of Memory's Rosay. I have had these autographs fac-similied from Mr. Munday's collection of letters because they connect the past with the present. These Stars in the firmament of Art have all and many more without money or price taken some part in the Thousand Hours of Play and Song - social gatherings initiated and managed by Mr. & Mrs. Munday. To this Farewell Tribute from the Green Park Club headd by its Royal members I have added overleaf one other record viz: that of the original Lyric Club. These with 76 organized for charities comprise 400 Entertainments given during the past 20 years.' The final page is headed 'Copy of a Record of the Old Lyric Club 1887. The girl has unkempt hair and wears crimson ear-rings a straw hat a blue jacket and a pink-spotted white pinafore tucked up at her waist.' 18105Issued by Nicolas Sarony & Co. New Bond Sreet London W.1. 1928 . A charming and evocative production. Cards in very good condition; album in good condition with light signs of age and wear. Initial note: 'This Travel Album is issued without charge to hold a complete set of twenty-five "A Day on the Airway" pictures as issued with all packings of Sarony Virginia Cigarettes plain or cork tipped.' The album comprises eight pages printed in black and green on thick paper stitched into black card wraps. Embossed on the front cover in faded gold is the title and an illustration of the plane an Imperial Airways 'Argosy' flying in clouds. Foreword with facsimile signature and facsimile ink portrait by Sir Alan Cobham concluding: 'I wish Nicolas Sarony & Co. every possible success with "A Day on the Airway." By issuing their cigarette pictures of aviation they are not only helping the cause of flying but they are thereby helping Britain.' The text describes a fictitious flight 'starting from Croydon Aerodrome with Amsterdam as the final place of landing' of which there is a full-page map. The cigarette cards each printed in colour within a gold border illustrate the text beginning with 'Weighing In' 'Land Lighthouses' 'Control Tower' 'Embarking' 'Position Finding' and 'Interior Saloon'. The following 19 cards illustrate scenes viewed from the plane ending with 'Central Station Amsterdam'. Uncommon: no copy found on either OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. 16760Red Cross Garden Southwark London. Dated 15 August 1914. On three sides of a vellum bifolium supplied by the London law stationers Witherby & Co. Dimensions of leaf 39 x 26 cm. In good condition lightly aged and creased. The document is a draft with several emendations in pencil including a lengthy addition in the margin of first page and a shorter one on the second page. Laid out in customary style within red rules. Docketed on fourth side: 'Dated 15th August 1914 The Earl of Ducie and Others to The Earl of Ducie and Others Red Cross Garden Assignment'. With stamp of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners signed by Hugh de Bock Porter. The document is signed by eight individuals: the Earl of Ducie Lancelot William Bennett Charles Stewart Loch Mary Lumsden Helen Ironside Janet Johnson Thomas Slingsby Tanner Cecil Antony Nussey with each of the eight signatures accompanied by that of a different witness. Eight wafer seals in red wax on a length of green ribbon. The document refers back to the original 999-year lease of 1888 with original lessees 'the said Earl of Ducie William Waldegrave Viscount Wolmer M.P. Herbert Bulkey Mackworth Praed Robert Hunter C.B. i.e. Sir Robert Hunter 1844-1913 Octavia Hill and the said Helen Ironside and the said Janet Johnson'. The document explains that as Hill and Hunter both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust have since died 'the Assignors are desirous of vesting the said premises in the assignees'. Red Cross Garden was laid out in 1887 on the site of a burnt down paper factory and a derelict warehouse. With its ornamental pond a bandstand a covered play area for children and colourful mosaics the garden was the venue for the annual Southwark Flower Show and other fetes and celebrations.
