1812AQ14278London: Printed for William Darton 1812. 28pp 4. With eight copper-plates dated 1813 and two terminal advertisement leaves. Stitched in original publisher's buff paper wrappers lettered in black. Extremities dust-soiled and a trifle rubbed some loss to spine. Substantial loss to foot of title touching imprint with loss of price occasional marginal chipping and small ink spots to text tear to one plate partial naive colouring of four plates. A charming and amusing poem first printed in 1811 celebrating the vibrancy and variation of England's capital accompanied by several attractive views of the city's landmarks including Westminster Abbey Primrose Hill the Tower and St. Paul's Cathedral. 40973London: 1860. 380 x 390 cm. A magnificent wall map of London. Engraved over thirty sheets joined backed onto linen trimmed with green silk and mounted on original rollers. The whole housed within original wooden case measuring roughly 420 x 15 x 14 cm. Original wash hand colour demarcating the gas company districts the names of which have been handwritten in bold black ink. The map shows the extents from Crouch End down to Streatham and Plaistow across to Wormwood Scrubs. Scale - 12 inches to the mile. The altitudes given in feet at numerous intervals almost at every inch. Small tear within map towards upper edge. Fabric tape repair on reverse side of upper right corner. One of the finial posts missing from the lower roller. The signature of Thomas Henry Sutton Sotheron-Estcourt "Chairman of the Select Comittee House of Commons" dated 14th Aug. 1860 appears in manuscript to the lower left corner beneath the title. Sotheron-Estcourt was M.P. for North Wiltshire and briefly held the office of Home Secretary in the previous year. The title repeated in manuscript on the linen verso on the reverse side of the upper right corner. Adjacent to this a manuscript note reads: "Deposited in the Clerk of the Peace's Office on the 22nd August 1860". The Clerk of the Peace was a semi judicial position appointed to the county council one the main tasks of the position was maintenance of local legal records. In passing the Metropolis Gas Act the House of Commons regulated the rivalling gas companies operating across London: demarcating the districts that they could supply outlined on the map establishing a standard unit of measurement for energy usage candle power and setting a maximum price per unit. The Home Secretary was effectively appointed to the role of ombudsman by the Act. [London: 1860] unknown

In good state.Hand coloured optical print of London. In the foreground the church of St Mary-le-Bow. In the distance St. Pauls Cathedral towering above the houses. The light sources and accents of the buildings and stars are perforated. On the verso of the print the holes are covered with translucent paper. Some of the holes are coated with green and red paint. This gives the illusion of coloured lights when the print is held in front of a light source. Blind stamped illustrations on the parchment corners which are used for reinforcement. Small oblong 8vo 18.5 x 27 cm; etched title and 29 etched and engraved views of London paper flaw to margin of Thanet House plate else clean and bright; eighteenth-century limp marbled paper boards gilt stamped lettering piece to upper board a little rubbed a very good copy.<br /> The scarce Seller issue of this illusive series of evocative plates of Stuart London.<br /><br />John Seller fl. 1664 d. 1697 was hydrographer to Charles II and James II publisher surveyor and compass-maker. The present series of plates were also published by Robert Morden and Philip Lea sometime between 1687 and 1692. A total of 31 plates have been identified by B. Adams London Illustrated 1604-1851 but the 31st plate of Clarendon House only exists in the GLC History library copy Adams and this copy is not considered incomplete without it. The plate of the Custom House bears the name of John Dunstall who could be the drawer of the originals of the etchings. He was aa drawing-master in Blackfriars who was mostly a follower of Hollar whose work provides the model for eight further plates of the series.<br /><br />The Seller issue has only appeared once at auction with the title page in a different state. Housed in a 8" x 5.5" green case with gilt lettering and a gilt device on the front board the front of the case states "London & Birmingham Railway. Map of the Line. above the device Incorporated 6th May 1833". A portion of the map backed with green goat in order to have it enter and exit the case more smoothly. A large and beautiful representation of the London to Birmingham railway line with the stops outlined at the bottom edge of the map. With two engraved vignettes showing the depots in Birmingham and in London. An early example of this captivating map. A bookplate and one stamp on the verso of the map otherwise no markings. The bookplate states that the map was a gift donated by James J. Hill a wealthy bibliophile from St. Paul to the University of Wisconsin Library. The map has three small spots of loss to its folds. Additionally there is the folding panorama as the frontispiece to the Badajoz volume. 8vo contemporary style calf the spine with double gilt ruled bands the compartments with panel designs of gilt corner work and central fleurs-de-lys red morocco lettering label gilt. 2 255 5 pp. plus plates; 4 53 pp.; 12 pp. Neat bookplate and name on preliminary blank and slight offsetting from one plate but fine in attractive binding. FIRST EDITION OF ALL THREE WORKS. The books here included are all considered quite scarce indeed. Few copies appear in the marketplace and few are in collections world wide. Cléry was the King's valet and this is a first hand account. It is considered the most important period writing on the captivity of Louis XV. It is bound with two other very scarce works A Correct Account Of The Visit Of His Royal Highness The Prince Regent And His Illustrious Guests To The University And City Of Oxford In June 1814. To Which Is Added The English Poems Recited On The Occasion; Accompanied by Some General Remarks. Oxford 1814 and with A Short Description of Badajoz And The Surrounding Country; With Extracts From The London Gazette; Explanatory Of The Pictures Exhibiting In The Panorama Leicester Square Representing The Siege In 1812. Port Chalmers dated in ink on the front panel "16/10/92". The internal page-spread includes the handwritten menu items including "Giblet Soup Boiled Turbot … Sheep Head and Brains Roast Turkey & Breast… Boiled Beef & Carrots Baked and Boiled Potatoes French Beans and Turnip Plum Pudding & Sweet … Lemon Jelly Gorgonzola & Cheddar Almonds & Raisinsâ€. Lightly soiled but still very attractive. ~ The Anglo-Australasian Steam Navigation Co. was formed in 1883 to operate direct UK – Australia services via Antwerp and the line was to later adopt the name "Milburn Line". There were two ships that plied the Milburn Line commissioned with the name Port Chalmers. This menu hails from the first built in 1891 so it was a nice shiny new ship when the passengers on board had this meal. The ship was sold on in 1896 and lasted until 1956. A second ship with the name was built in 1905 but was seized by the Germans in 1914. Lightly soiled but still very attractive. Wm. Milburn & Co unknown

The signature in a different hand from the rest of the document is difficult to decipher: '<> <Paterson> Barrister at Law'. The Paterson family were prominent on the island. The document begins: 'The question submitted to me for an opinion is whether Messrs Thomson Hankey & Co. are entitled to a right of way for carts drawn by cattle &c along a passage lying between a lot of land in the Town of Grenville the property of the firm and a lot in the occupation of Mrs. V. Morrison. That Messrs Thomson Hankey & Co. are entitled to a right of foot-way and a right of way for hand carts is not disputed by Mrs. Morrison; but she claims that no right of way for carts drawn by cattle &c. exists.' The barrister proceeds to give his opinion that the firm do have a right of way by presenting a mass of local information. From the Hankey & Co. banking archive. With an engraved armorial title page 4 full-page engraved portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York and a half-page engraved view of St. Paul's Cathedral. Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York common notes including the dominical letters golden number and religious festive days for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral a calendar an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign a list of mayors and sheriffs 1767-1788 one page listing bank holidays and an overview of the Royal family King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. Adlard an overview of sun and moon eclipses in that year the calendar a "regal table" overview of British monarchs since 1066 an overview of the Royal family of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their children lists of great officers of state of Great Britain and Ireland an overview of stamps bills and promissory notes and finally a list of "transfer days at the bank &c." including the South Sea House and India House.The London Almanack was published by the Company of Stationers from the end of the 17th century until the end of the 19th century. They are of special interest for their fine publisher's bindings but also for their striking views of London.With a manucript owner's inscription on the front blank endpaper recto of the engraved title page in pencil "A. S. Wossley" and pencil annotations between the printed lines of the calendar. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear the binding is slightly damaged at the head and foot of the spine not affecting the integrity of the binding. Masquerier on front cover. In fair condition on aged paper in aged and worn wraps with occasional pencil markings in margins. An important catalogue issued in part to make a point during the Great War. The most valuable item by far covering nearly half a page is 223 a copy of Wheeler and Broadley's 'Napoleon and the Invasion of England' 'extra-illustrated and extended to 4 volumes' at £130. The final four sections are 'The map of Europe in the time of Napoleon' pp.35-37; 'Engravings' pp.37-42; 'Napoleonic Caricatures' pp.42-44 and 'Autograph Letters and Manuscripts' pp.44-46. No. 749 priced at £50 is Gen. Gaspard Gourgaud's 'Manuscripts respecting Napoleon I. in his autograph'; its twenty-line description begins with 'The Original Manuscript of a Portion of Napoleon's Own Memoirs dictated to Gen. Gourgaud at St. Helena 11pp. folio.' Also present is a letter by Napoleon's mother priced at £14 and transcribed in full.
