192223077Allentown: Allen R Cressman's Sons. 1922. Beautiful wooden cigar box with a striking full-color portrait of Jack London 1876-1916 on the inside of the top of the box repeated in a smaller version as a seal on the right edge of the top and right end itself. The left end has no special illustration which allows one to notice the thin ribbon with Jack London repeating on every edge of the box. The top has a decorated circle containing the authors name stamped in black and blind. The color portrait on the inside of the top shows a rolled manuscript over Londons right shoulder and an open book stacked on a closed book over Londons left shoulder. Beneath the portrait is Londons facsimile signature. All of these decorations-except for the portrait itself are embossed in gilt. ¶¶ The wooden front panels top edge is sealed with a color decorated small circle within which are four gilt embossed book covers i.e. small rectangles bearing the titles The Sea Wolf The Call of the Wild A Daughter of the Snowsand The Game. ¶¶ These are all early titles in Londons career as they were published between October 1902 and June 1905. Beneath the bottom of the seal on the front panel stamped in black and blind is Londres Extra.The bottom of the box bears a boxed 6-line legal statement stamped in black and headed Factory No 189 First DistrictPA. HEARTS OF THREE was published four years after London's death and two years after it was published in England. Like his two late books about dogs this was hackwork necessary to raise cash which he wrote in Hawaii during his final year. The last long novel of his life HEARTS OF THREE was a sorry business a piece of romantic trash that bore no mark of Jack's style at all. It was the first time he had been asked to "novelize" a screenplay. In fact HEARTS OF THREE was a serial adventure story of fifteen episodes written by the screenwriter of "The Perils of Pauline" and "The Exploits of Elaine." To ask an author of Jack's quality to flesh it out was an insult and an indignity. He wrote it because the Hearst Sunday supplements bribed him with $25000 over and above his regular contract with Cosmopolitan. He thought the book would have a large sale; it was so badly done that in fact it failed. Sinclair "Romantic trash" or not it is a Jack London title and a none-too-common one at that. This is a remarkably bright copy fine except for the slightest of wear at the spine tips. Quite uncommon thus. Sisson & Martens p. 104; Blanck 11982. <br/><br/> hardcover books

First Edition of this posthumously-published book about a dog written by the author while stretched out on Waikiki Beach. In early 1915 Jack and Charmian left California for Hawaii plagued by financial problems he owned and owed mortgages on six houses for himself and for his dependents -- yet the financial problems were not so bad that the two of them couldn't have four or five servants in Honolulu. The only way out of the financial problems was through hackwork. He decided to set off for Hawaii with Charmian and to write two new dog stories. They had never failed him. The market would lap them up. The leisured life in Honolulu did not encourage him to write well and his two dog novels were no more than competent products for the market. JERRY OF THE ISLANDS was the worse with its hero a thoroughbred Irish terrier specially trained for n-word-chasing. Yet this hackwork did keep his head above water.
