175556121A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype. 1755. John Stow's A Survey of London was first published in 1598 with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype 1643-1737 the ecclesiastical historian and biographer published a new hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720. Copper engraving. Good condition Hand coloured. Size: 36.5 x 30.4 cm. 14½ x 12 inches unknown

1900C103746 pages with diagrams tables and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" bound in original quarter gray cloth with stiff boards and black lettering to front cover. Betts: 25-38; Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana: 5254 First edition.

The City Club of London was used to holding tournaments and in 1900 came up with the idea of inviting several leading British masters and prominent amateur players to see how the lesser lights would hold up. The Masters: Joseph Henry Blackburne Isidor Gunsberg Francis Joseph Lee James Mason Richard Teichmann Louis Van Vliet. The Amateurs: Ellis Eugene Jones Thomas Francis Lawrence Rudolf Johannes Loman Samuel Passmore Thomas Physick A Tietjen William Ward. Blackburne started well by winning his first four games but stumbled badly with only two draws in his next five. Teichmann then took a comfortable lead but Mason made up ground until he was only a half-point behind going into their last round game. However this turned into a relatively short draw while Gunsberg closed fast to catch Mason for a share of second place. An excellent showing for Ward while Blackburne had to be somewhat disappointed with his result. Blackburne placed sixth with a 7 1/2 score. Thomas Francis Lawrence was seventh to claim part of the prize money of two pounds sterling. Filing in behind were in descending order Francis Joseph Lee Rudolf Johannes Loman Arthur Ernest Tietjen Edward Owen Jones Thomas Physick and last Samuel Passmore defeating Mason for his only win preventing him for sharing or taking first.

Condition:

Corners bumped lightly soiled some foxing to end pages spine ends rubbed else a very good copy. A fascinating tract about the election of London's sheriffs written during the Exclusion Crisis in the late seventeenth century. Due to the sheriffs' control over jury selection they became a central part of the debate with both parties seeking to exploit the office for political advantage. ESTC R17026. Slight toning to interior contents. Leather backstrip lettered in gilt. Henry Mead hardcover
