The later half calf is rubbed dull and stained; it remains sound with everything well bound in. The later endpaper has an owner's bookplat e. Three ink manuscript genealogy leaves are bound after the original endpaper they have neat ink crests. There is some foxing throughout the book and to the map and plates and some pencil notes in the margins. hardcover

A rare survival of the sole edition of a plan presented to common council by solicitor and politician John Paterson 1705-1789 for raising £282000 for public improvements in the capital. Paterson's obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine 1789 pp.1154-5 noted that as a result of his financial acumen to him 'among a variety of other conveniences the public are indebted for Blackfriars bridge the widening of old streets and the introduction of new ones and many regulations tending to preserve the safety of passengers to secure the quiet and promote the trade and commerce of the City of London'. Very early rare and detailled map of London showing from Hyde Park in the west to Mills End in the East and from Saint George's Field in the South to City Gardens in the North open spaces and bounderies are coloured. The plan gives information on parishes in Westminster and Middlesex with the Bills of Morality. The plan consists of 20 sections mounted on linen. - A bit wrinkled linen on the reverse side a bit dusty. unknown
175556121A Survey of the Cities of London & Westminster. John Strype. 1755. John Stow's A Survey of London was first published in 1598 with a second edition following in 1603. Stow's most famous work it is an evocative 'perambulation' of the streets of the Tudor capital which forms the main framework of the book. The huge growth of the metropolis the devastation wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the subsequent rebuilding of the City made an updating of the Survey highly desirable. It was to answer this need that John Strype 1643-1737 the ecclesiastical historian and biographer published a new hugely expanded version of Stow's Survey of London in 1720. Copper engraving.
