Margins very lightly creased and tanned; manuscript title in ink on the verso; essentially in fine condition. A scarce illustrated map of Nazi Germany prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. The map is found in several states; this example is uncoloured and features the Nazi swastika in its correct orientation in the centre of the top border other versions have the German eagle or a horizontal swastika instead. The illustrations show prominent buildings or geographical features; the vignette for Friedrichshafen the site of Zeppelin's famous dirigible factory shows a large airship. Manuscript title page with decorative ink border. 61pp. of neat calligraphic manuscript text with ruled borders the book completely full. Nineteenth-century pencil note to the second front blank "Chef-d'oeuvre d'ecriture. Aide-memoire pour se rememorer des phases du pouvoir de l'Autriche en Italie" "Masterpiece of writing. Memo aid to remember phases of Austria's power in Italy". The binding firm with a little chipping to the spine ends and rubbing to the spine and joints wear to the bottom corners and a few small scuffs to the lower board. The contents with toning to the endpapers and the odd minor mark are otherwise in very good order throughout. An appealing late eighteenth-century French manuscript written in a fine calligraphic hand chronicling the key events in German and Central European history from 691 to 1779. Most likely produced for personal study or instruction the gilt crown devices on the rather handsome binding potentially indicate aristocratic ownership. [Original manuscript]. unknown

First edition of this fascinating 18th-century history of the town on the Neckar River and the ruin of the famed Heidelberg Castle. Kayser details the destruction wrought on the city and the castle during the Thirty Years War the Reformation and destruction of much of the castle by the French armies in 1693 and 1694. After the 1697 Treaty of Ryswick marked the end of the War of the Grand Alliance Carl Philipp III installed Perkeo of Heidelberg his court jester in the castle to watch over the wine stock and much of the city was reconstructed in the Baroque style. The famous Heidelberg Tun a gigantic wine barrel in the Heidelberg Castle Cellars depicted here in the engraving by Kolb was the third Fass such giant barrel and was built by Carl Philipp in 1728. Engraved chart listing the noble families and clergy of Germany published by the Amsterdam publisher Pieter Schenk 1660-1718. The chart includes 15 large coats of arms of kings bishops dukes and counts 20 smaller coats of arms of 10 abbots and 10 abbesses and 23 of bishops. With illustrations cut from 19th- or 20th-century reproductions of early woodcuts ca. 21 x 14 cm pasted on the front Annunciation and back pastedown Christophorus with the year "cccc xx tercio". Interesting example of the study of early printing in 19th-century England. The 12 leaves come from the library of the 19th-century collector Dr C. Inglis whose father boasted an impressive collection of early printed books. Inglis believed that the leaves came from an unknown work titled De vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Moguntinum printed in 1453 by Gerhardus Episcopus. Tipped in is a letter to Inglis by the well-known bibliographer William Blades discussing this matter. Although the text opens with "De Vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Maguntinensis Gerhardi Archiepiscipi" it was in fact part of Statuta synodalia herbipolensia printed at Würzburg by Georg Reyser in ca. 1486. The first 6 leaves are 2-d7 and the final 6 leaves are quire g.With owner's inscription of Sir Edward Coates bookplate with initials "CC" Clifford Coates the bookplate of Dr. C. Inglis and some annotations on front pastedown; an autograph letter signed by Wiliam Blades to C. Inglis tipped to flyleaf. 12 well-preserved leaves.l Cf. 26503Without date or place. Three items all typed. In good condition lightly aged. ONE: Covering note probably by Peskett. 1p. 12mo. Headed 'Ribbentrop's Speech on the Occupation of Norway 1940'. Beneath the heading is an eight-line quotation from Low's 'Years of Wrath' followed by: 'The document herewith issued by the German Foreign Office is the Italian ambassador's copy of a number issued to those present on the occasion of Ribbentrop's speech to the Heads of Foreign Missions and members of the German and foreign press in Berlin in 1940. This is the full text of his speech in which he announced the evidence mentioned above of Britain's intention to invade Norway. In this Ribbentrop states that the Reich government can prove that Britain and France had long planned the occupation of Norway and that it was only by the last-minute intervention of Germany that the plan failed. He refers to the British attack on the ALTMARK in January 1940 and to British units engaged in the other operations notably the Sherwood Foresters. The document appears to have been put together in a hurry. It has been annotated here and there and underlined in places by the Italian ambassador in whose room at the Italian Embassy in Berlin it was found by W/Cdr S. John Peskett OBE in 1945. . A translation from the diplomatic French by W/Cdr Peskett is attached.' TWO: The text of Ribbentrop's speech in 'diplomatic French'. 29pp. 8vo. Stapled. With the annotations described above. An interesting anthology of translations of selected German articles from various late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth century periodicals including numerous by G. Leibniz mathematics mechanics logic philology and Philipp Jacob Sachs a Lewenheimb alchemy medicine. Initially published in parts under the title Acta Germanica or The literary memoirs of Germany &c. London 1742 the first collected two-volume edition appeared in 1743 printed by and for the editor Godfrey Smith. In his dedication to the fourth edition of The laboratory; or School of Arts 1755 Smith notes that he has suspended continuation of Acta Germanica for want of encouragement but hopes 'not only to finish the Second Volume but likewise to compleat my Design'. However no material appears to have been added after 1750 and the present work is a re-issue with cancel title page of the original sheets of Acta Germanica. Volume II is substantially smaller than volume I and has no index or title page but the text concludes with 'Finis'. 1810ABC_48289Amsterdam: E. Maaskamp 1810. Folded. An engraved map printed on linen ca. 33.5 x 43 cm. partly coloured by hand in red and blue ink. Extremely rare itinerary map of Northwestern Europe in the time of Napoleon printed on linen. It encompasses the north of the French empire including present day Netherlands Belgium Luxembourg and northern France down to Paris as well as the confederation of the Rhine present day Germany to Berlin in the east and Stuttgart in the south. The present edition of the map printed on linen is very rare as we have only been able to trace one other copy in sales records of the past 100 years and none in institutions.The map shows the routes between the major cities indicating post stations as well as the time of travel between each stop. These routes have here been coloured in red and the rivers canals and sea are coloured in blue.The present map is most likely the first edition but this is difficult to ascertain as it is not dated. Later editions followed as well as an English translation in 1815. On the separate map for the later editions also printed on linen the borders are adapted to the political situation of the time after 1815: the borders of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are indicated and "Royaume des Pays Bas" is added including "et Pays-Bas" at the end of the title. On our map the Netherlands are rendered as belonging to the French Empire after 1810 meaning it must have been printed before the other examples.The map is slightly frayed around the edges with some soiling/staining mostly on the right half. Georgius Agricola born Georg Bauer; 24 March 1494 21 November 1555 was a German Humanist scholar mineralogist and metallurgist. Born in the small town of Glauchau in the Electorate of Saxony of the Holy Roman Empire he was broadly educated but took a particular interest in the mining and refining of metals. He was the first to drop the Arabic definite article al- exclusively writing chymia and chymista in describing activity that we today would characterize as chemical or alchemical giving chemistry its modern name. For his groundbreaking work De Natura Fossilium published in 1546 he is generally referred to as the father of mineralogy and the founder of geology as a scientific discipline. He is well known for his pioneering work De re metallica libri XII that was published in 1556 one year after his death. This 12-volume work is a comprehensive and systematic study classification and methodical guide on all available factual and practical aspects that are of concern for mining the mining sciences and metallurgy investigated and researched in its natural environment by means of direct observation. Unrivalled in its complexity and accuracy it served as the standard reference work for two centuries. Agricola stated in the preface that he will exclude "all those things which I have not myself seen or have not read or heard of". He continued "That which I have neither seen nor carefully considered after reading or hearing of I have not written about." As a scholar of the Renaissance he was committed to a universal approach towards learning and research. He published over 40 complete scholarly works during his professional life on a wide range of subjects and disciplines such as pedagogy medicine metrology mercantilism pharmacy philosophy geology history and many more. His innovative and comprehensive scholarly work based on new and precise methods of production and control has made his work a central part of scholarship and understanding of science during that period. With several advertisements for local businesses musical instrument stores photographers book publishers doctors among other small businesses. This newspaper contains an exposé on Bismarck's life on his estate in Friedrichsruh. By this time Bismarck was elderly with his health worsening every day. He had been in forced retirement for a few years due to Emperor Wilhelm the II's displeasure with Bismarck's politics and social views. The Illustrated Newspaper issued its first periodical in 1843 and until 1944 functioned as a weekly periodical focused on national news. General edge wear to the wrappers and spine. J.J.
