194148407Jerusalem: Peter Freund 1941. First limited edition. Softcover. g to vg. Signed Ludwig Strauß and numbered 160/200 on title page. 20 leaves. Original red half cloth library tape over textured burgundy stiff wraps with framed black lettering on cream label of cover.

"This edition as long as a publication of an extensive collection of my poetry is impossible is meant to preserve and distribute my poems of the last seven years. For that reason everything already published was disregarded particularly those poems which were published in my books 'Land Israel' and 'Kleine Nachtwachen' the private Hamburg edition 'Neue Verse' and those published in the Schocken Verlag Almanachs. Ben Schemen January 1941." Ludwig Strauss title page. Text in German. Wraps with light wear along edges and a half an inch sunned stripe along red library tape of spine on front cover. Block lightly age-toned. Overall in good to very good condition. The poems were written after Strauss' departure from Germany settling in Israel in 1934. Strauss embraces his fate and immerses himself into Jewish culture describing the nature of his new home with affection and respect alluding to his cultural upbringing metaphorically while coalescing present and past melancholically and grieving despair at times not without discrete cautioning of the danger at hand yet leading the way into the future. The poems are rendered in variant forms. Recommended: the essay by Na'ama Rokem from the Dibur issue 2 Spring 2016 Stanford University "Form" - The Rhythms of Language Mixing: Ludwig Strauss's Notes for an Impossible German-Hebrew Hymn.

Sonnet From our issue:

"Schein weckt mich The glow awakens me
Um Mitternacht. Though a box-office success the work received mixed critical reviews; Ludwig Speidel Fremden-Blatt 12 February 1871 considered the piece 'promises the most splendid expectations for the future' while Hanslick Neue Freie Presse 12 February 1871 dismissed it as 'Strauss dance music with words added and ascribed rôles'." a89773One bound volume of 4 original first edition works refuting the conclusions of David Strauss. The 4 works are: 1 Beitrage zur Spekulativen Philosophie von Carl Friedrich Goschel Berlin 1838 284p. 2 Der Historische Christus und die Philosophie von Julius Schaller Leipzig 1838 137p. 3 Kritik der Principien der Strauss'schen Glaubenslehre Leipzig 1845 72p. 4 Die Speculative Dogmatik von Dr. David Freidr. Struss Parts one and two complete Tubingen 1841 and 1842 102p. 132p. All works in German. All bound in one large octavo volume with 3/4 dark brown leather with brown marbled boards. Binding secure; some light toning and foxing and wear in text. Some curling of page edges. The articles are of various sizes but binding of all is nice and secure. The works are of slightly different sizes. Laid in are two nineteenth century newspaper articles about Strauss. David Strauss 1808 - 1874 began as a Christian but was led by his studies to doubt the historical Jesus and to see the Bible as myth. Wikipedia cites the Earl of Shaftesbury announcing in reaction to a work of Strauss that it was "the most pestilential book ever vomited out of the jaws of hell" which sort of gives one an ideal of vitriol Strauss faced. Gilt spine title. No ownership marks. Good Plus. Pictures available on request. . hardcover
