br. Questo lavoro presenta un'analisi dell'influenza di Hermann Cohen sul pensiero di Leo Strauss, conosciuto ancora oggi soprattutto come un filosofo politico. Grazie a tale analisi è possibile mettere a fuoco la formazione filosofica di Strauss, le sue fonti d'ispirazione e le intenzioni che mossero originariamente la sua riflessione. Il legame con Cohen mostra, infatti, l'importanza che per Strauss ebbe il contesto ebraico nel quale egli inserì inizialmente la sua attività di studioso e insegnante, in quanto membro a Berlino della "Akademie fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums" e a Francoforte del "Lehrhaus" fondato da Franz Rosenzweig. È a partire da una riflessione sui problemi dell'ebraismo moderno che Strauss ebbe modo di meditare su una situazione culturale e politica che era quella dell'umanità occidentale nel periodo di crisi della liberaldemocrazia e dell'ascesa di movimenti anti-razionalistici sul piano filosofico, e totalitari sul piano politico. Strauss, durante tutto l'arco della sua vita, è tornato in diverse occasioni a commentare i saggi di Cohen. In particolare egli si è soffermato, sin dall'inizio, sull'interpretazione coheniana di Spinoza, su quella di Maimonide e delle fonti antiche Platone e Aristotele, e infine, sull'opera postuma Religione della ragione dalle fonti dell'ebraismo, per la quale egli ha scritto anche un saggio introduttivo in occasione della traduzione inglese dell'opera.
