Chaldej (1917-1997) hat als Kriegsreporter Bilder geschaffen, die weltberühmt wurden. Der Rotarmist, der die Fahne auf dem Berliner Reichstag hisst, gehört zu diesen Motiven. Der TASS-Fotograf war von 1941 bis 1945 an der Front, dokumentierte den Vormarsch der Sowjetarmee und die Eroberung Berlins, war Bildberichterstatter der Potsdamer Konferenz und der Nürnberger Prozesse. Doch er geriet in Vergessenheit. Erst kurz vor seinem Tode wurde Chaldej wiederentdeckt und gilt inzwischen weltweit als einer der bedeutendsten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts."

This work of Halacha Jewish law by German Rabbi Noah Hayyim Zevi Hirsch Berlin 1734-1802 interprets the talmudic laws concerning the washing of the hands the laws of mixed eruvs "Eruvei Hazerot" and the prohibition on incest. One of the more prominent Talmudists of his era Rabbi Berlin was considered an intelligent teacher and interpreter of the the oral law. Here he makes use of both the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud as his sources. This is among his best known works. Decorative woodblock headpiece at the top of the first page and a decorative floral woodblock tailpiece on the verso of leaf 254. The last four pages at the back contain an extensive index refering to the Shulhan Aruch printed in three columns.<br /> <br /> Text throughout Hebrew.<br /> <br /> Binding with some minor bumping and scratches to the spine. Some minor bumping to extremities including the bottom right corner of the front cover and the side-edge of the back board. Title page with a period inscription in ink along the bottom margin as well as a few light water stains. A few small wormholes start on the title page and run until p.25 one of which continues until p.130. Text almost entirely unaffected by the holes. Small orange sticker on the top on the interior front cover. Binding in very good interior in very good- condition overall. The first page of Goschen’s two-page ‘Aide Mémoire’ on a separate leaf and the second page and von Jagow’s note on different leaves of a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. N.B. The entire item is a photostatic copy. Reproduced at the head and down the left margin of the first page of Goschen’s text are manuscript notes in German including at top left: "A15930 pr. 4. August 1914 pm. / Von Sir E. Goschen / heute Nachmittag überprüft / 4/8 J." and the copy also includes at the foot of this page a clue regarding the source: the typed words ‘Russland 104’. Goschen’s typed text unsigned begins: ‘Aide Mémoire / Sir Edward Goschen has been informed by Sir Edward Grey the British Foreign Minister that His Majesty the King of the Belgians has addressed to His Majesty King George an appeal for diplomatic intervention on behalf of Belgium.’ The well-known text explains that the German government’s proposal of ‘friendly neutrality entailing free passage through Belgian territory . has been categorically refused by Belgium as a flagrant violation of the Law of Nations’. The British government ask for ‘an assurance that the demand made upon Belgium will not be proceeded with’ and ‘Sir Edward Goschen is instructed to ask for an immediate reply.’ Von Jagow’s note reads: ‘Ich habe Sir E. Goschen geantwortet daß wir die belgische Neutralität aus Nothwehr hätten verletzen müssen ich habe alle unsere zwingenden Gründe auseinandergesetzt und alle in London abgegebenen Versicherungen nochmals wiederholt. / Jagow.’ See Image. Berthold AG n.d. 1920s. H. Berthold AG was one of the largest and most successful type foundries in the modern typographic world. Founded in Berlin in 1858 initially as a manufacturer of printer's rules it began casting metal type in the 1890s. It was a major contributor to the introduction of new typefaces including Akzidenz-Grotesk an early sans-serif which prefigured Helvetica. The company successfully transitioned to cold type technology in the 1950s and ceased operations in 1993.
