Loewenberg col. 1013.<br/><br/>"Die Walküre is the music drama that most satisfactorily embodies the theoretical principles of Oper und Drama. A thoroughgoing synthesis of poetry and music is achieved without any notable sacrifice in musical expression. Indeed many of the most powerful passages of the work achieve their effect precisely through the organic relationship of music and text. Die Walküre is generally regarded as the most approachable of the Ring operas and it has certainly proved the most susceptible to performance in extracts." Barry Millington in Grove Music Online. B. In 'Zukunftsmusik' Wagner continued to elevate his own species of text-related musical discourse above pure instrumental music but the claim is modified by a reappraisal of the worth of symphonic music particularly that of Beethoven. In Beethoven he finally accepts that words and music cannot enjoy totally equal status: with Schopenhauer he maintains that music is the ultimate vehicle of expression." <br/><br/>" . Like all composers of his era Wagner grew up in the shadow of Beethoven and the Classical symphonic tradition. His obsession with Beethoven revealed both in the autobiographical writings and in fictional stories such as the novella Eine Pilgerfahrt zu Beethoven reflected a perceived need to confront that tradition acknowledging the legacy of Beethoven and at the same time staking a claim as his natural successor." Although originally written in English by Dr. Wagner it has been published only in Spanish; the translation is by Joaquin Garcia Pimentel and Federico Gomez de Orozco. This monumental work was ten years in preparation. It contains a description of the books printed in Mexico before 1601 and in most cases includes a reproduction of the title page references to other bibliographies census of copies in public and private hands and prices and dates of sale.
