First US limited edition no. 82 of 1150 copies quarto size 184 pp. signed by Arthur Rackham. British illustrator Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 is credited with renewing interest in book illustration at a vital moment of advances in printing technology. The subtle colours and thin lines were unlike anything that had come before as if plucked from the fog of a wild imagination breathing new life into the whole of children's book illustration. Part of Rackham's genius was his ability to convey both menace in his grotesque humanoid trees and trolls as well as delicate and almost ethereal beauty in his fairies princesses and heroines.<br/><br/>This work "Siegfried & The Twilight of the Gods" is considered by many to be Rackham's most magnificent work; based on the "Götterdämmerung" by Richard Wagner the last in his cycle of four musical dramas collectively called "Der Ring des Nibelungen" "The Ring of the Nibelung" it is loosely based on Old Norse mythologies. <br/><br/>Rackham created thirty full-colour illustrations for this work which are breathtaking in presenting the passions of the "Ring" and its many characters: the ethereal beauty of Brünnhilde the venomous evil of the dragon Fafner the cunning of the dwarves the ecstasy of love found and the subsequent despair of love betrayed and lost. Manuscript notebook composed by Ida Sylva Wagner a young woman training to become a teacher at the Bloomsburg State Normal School now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania between 1888-1889. Comprised of 88 pages in ink and pencil blending lecture and reading notes with what appear to be Ida's own drafts of analytic essays practice lesson plans and examination questions. Quarter cloth over marbled boards measuring 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Shelf-wear to extremities and hinges tender but holding. Text block overall tight with mild toning not affecting text. Wagner's ownership signature and school information on front paste-down; second ownership signature along with Wagner's later teaching location on rear paste-down. In Very Good condition overall considering its daily class use and apparent usage as a reference guide during Ida's later teaching career.<br/><br/>Established in 1869 the Bloomsburg State Normal School aimed to provide rigorous teacher training to ensure that regional educators could "teach the youth elements of classical education" Bloomsburg University. State census records show that she would have been 22 at the time of this class and that she later moved to Luzerne County to work as a teacher after graduation. This notebook rigorously documents her work in an advanced Practical Teaching course which provided pedagogical methodology as well as requiring students to put methods into practice by designing usable teaching materials. Ida's notebook is roughly divided into sections with blanks separating each; and they include practical notes including Introductory Consideration Foundations and Principles Length of Recitation Object Lessons and Plan of Lessons as well as sample content for lessons such as Primary Reading Primary Numbers and Rules of Grammar. In her hand Ida reflects on the importance of theory and practice noting "The powers of the child which demand the teacher's attention are the physical the intellectual the moral and the spiritual.before knowing can take place there must be something to know and the thing to be known must affect its appropriate sense." This guiding principle clearly shapes the class and Ida's notes show that she is being trained in the "something to know" for example the 15 pages of vocabulary pronunciations and definitions as well as the "affecting its appropriate sense" for example the 46 initial pages on methods for shaping appropriate lessons. <br/><br/>A dense resource with research possibilities including but not limited to the fields of history of pedagogy history of American higher education women's education and employment and gender studies. Harrap and Co. 1911 1911 Illustrated with 16 full color plates tipped in text printed on heavy gray stock decoratively lettered and embellished with numerous lithographs printed in orange gray and black throughout the text designed by Willy Pogany in his characteristic fairy-like Art Nouveau style. Finely bound in full black morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with five raised bands to spine compartments and bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt elaborate leaf design stamped in gilt to turn-ins all edges gilt black and gray marbled endpapers with the original cloth bound in to rear. Overall a beautiful example of turn of the century illustrations in an exquisite binding. Tannhauser is an opera by Richard Wagner inspired by the German legend of the medieval poet Tannhauser and the Warturg Song Contest. Written in three acts the opera tells of the struggle between love in its many forms. This particular edition contains a poetic interpretation of the opera's original libretto by T. W. Rolleston. Born in Hungary in 1882 Willy Pogany was a prolific illustrator active in Europe and the United States throughout the first half of the 20th century. After attending art school he travelled through Munich and Paris finally finding success in London following the demand for illustrators sparked by Arthur Rackham's publication of Rip Van Winkle in 1906 which was widely popular. The Rhein-Gold The Walkyrie Siegfried and Dusk of the Gods preceded in English only by the privately printed individual librettos a hastily gathered abridged assembly of 238 pages total published to secure copyright. Our edition issued to accompany Wagner's conducting of the cycle in London has all 4 parts with all the stage directions and dialogue. Contemporary half cloth marbled boards printed paper label near fine complete with the volume half-title the 4 half-titles for the individual parts and the coda To Richard Wagner. Ex-Edw. Schuberth with his company's oval stamp to the general half-title. The source was the prodigious German epic poem Das Nibelungen Lied anonymously written by an unknown massive-aggressive in the 12th century about events in the 5th or 6th. It recounts the deeds of Siegfried the Dragon Slayer the Germanator his betrayal and murder and the revenge of his wife Kriemhilda the real heroine. In 1816 Professor of philology Karl Lachmann began a careful study of the 11 known more or less complete manuscripts then ordered them chronologically collated corrected translated and amalgamated them to finally produce the version in Middle High German. It remains a foundational pillar of European literature but it was Wagner 1813-1883 who transformed it into an opera the only venue where people die of love by first revisiting Lachmann then brooding upon it and finally escalating the dramatic harmonic and most famously the instrumental forces beyond any of his predecessors setting a new and basic though often ignored challenge for his successors. The Ring Cycle exemplifies his theories and it's conjoining with national epic poetry was the appropriate agent for a masterwork. Schott unknown books

First Edition. <br /><br />Quarto 11 x 8 1/2 inches; 280 x 225 mm 20 yellow and white mimeographed pages printed rectos only in stapled wrappers with a hand-painted cover attached to the upper wrapper. <br /><br />A series of letters or "lettres" from poet and artist D.R. Wagner to d.a. levy featuring a hand-painted cover by levy the legendary Cleveland poet publisher and provocateur. <br /><br />According to the title page only 150 copies were published by levy's Seven Flowers Press. This particular book an important mimeo production of the Cleveland poetry scene is notable because levy made a different painting or collage for the cover of each copy. On this copy levy appears to have painted on a magazine page and then attached it to the heavy card wrappers. <br /><br />The book features a lengthy introduction by T.L. Kryss flower drawings by mara a short "note by publisher" d.a. levy followed by letters to levy. Wagner writes on Zen Buddhism meditation and Egyptian mysticism among other things with a strong dose of stream of consciousness. ".I don't have one get yrself a cat --siamese wld be the best I think and meditate with it -- I did with baxter's sisters cat and they know different paths you can take and most of the company of gods are responsive to prayers when the cat is with you -- they cats follow so easily." Letter of June 20 1966. <br /><br />OCLC shows 23 institutional holdings under 3 accession numbers: 2841056 264872262 and 213819477. Two late production states of the script for the 1945 film based on a story idea by Jack Wagner cowritten with John Steinbeck and adapted as a screenplay by Frank Butler. The release dialogue script records a print totaling 51 more feet than the censorship script. Irving Pichel directed and Dorothy Lamour J. Carrol Naish and Arturo de Cordova led the cast. Obviously little apart from Steinbeck's treatment for the film the Valentine collection included a carbon typescript may be easily identified as purely Steinbeck's work; however nothing relating to the script saw lifetime publication so even continuity scripts such as these take on some significance for Steinbeck scholars. Internally clean and fresh. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. "Not only are the plates technically interesting but three are from drawings by Henry Alexander Ogden" - McGrath. The result of this trichromatic chromolithographic technique while somewhat blotchy in appearance probably considerably lowered the cost of printing such a plate. Wagner's work was published in a one-volume edition which contained forty-two plates including seventeen of the U.S. Navy with accompanying text.
