45944The most famous wrestler of the 1940s and '50s Gorgeous George practically invented the outrageous pro wrestling image standardized today: he created his "Human Orchid" persona by wearing his hair long and dying it blonde he wore sequined robes he was the first to use entrance music "Pomp and Circumstance"; he cheated and broke the rules every chance he got having as his motto "Win if you can lose if you must but always cheat!"; in 1950 he won the American Wrestling Association's world championship by defeating Don Eagle; he died nearly penniless of an enlarged heart and alcohol abuse at age 48. ODS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. likely ca. 1960. Very good. Mildly edgeworn mainly along two-punched left margin that has two tape stains one 1" one ½" impacting only the upper portion of the "G" in "Gorgeously." Original pencil sketch by unknown amateur artist showing Gorgeous George full length standing in typically outrageous full-length elaborate robe. Vertically running up the blank left margin the wrestler pens an enormous "Gorgeously Yours Gorgeous George" in typical light blue ballpoint. Extremely exceptionally unusual in this format -- the only signed Gorgeous George drawing we have encountered or even heard of. unknown

His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings which were combined with the use of watercolour a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Arthur Rackham is widely regarded as one of the leading illustrators from the 'Golden Age' of British book illustration which roughly encompassed the years from 1890 until the end of the First World War. During that period there was a strong market for high quality illustrated books which typically were given as Christmas gifts. Many of Rackham's books were produced in a deluxe limited edition often vellum bound and usually signed as well as a smaller less ornately bound quarto 'trade' edition. This was sometimes followed by a more modestly presented octavo edition in subsequent years for particularly popular books. The onset of the war in 1914 curtailed the market for such quality books and the public's taste for fantasy and fairies also declined in the 1920s.

Size: Small quarto. 1899WRCAM31111Akron Oh.: The Werner Company 1899. 103pp. plus twenty-five chromolithographs. Oblong folio. Original pictorial cloth. Corners bumped cloth edgeworn and spotted. Hinges weak. Internally clean and fresh. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. "Not only are the plates technically interesting but three are from drawings by Henry Alexander Ogden" - McGrath. The result of this trichromatic chromolithographic technique while somewhat blotchy in appearance probably considerably lowered the cost of printing such a plate. Wagner's work was published in a one-volume edition which contained forty-two plates including seventeen of the U.S. Navy with accompanying text. It was also published in a two-volume set with one volume for the army as here and one for the navy. McGRATH pp.149 163 172. BENNETT p.109. The Werner Company hardcover books
