Vi si trova una guida completa e aggiornata al sistema drammaturgico-musicale wagneriano, alla sua ricchezza concettuale e ai presupposti estetici, filosofici e politici che ne furono alla base. È costituito da un'ampia introduzione dedicata alle suddette premesse (con numerose citazioni dagli scritti di Wagner), seguita da un 'racconto' dettagliato delle vicende - innanzi tutto - dei quattro drammi musicali, in altrettanti capitoli. La trattazione si avvale degli apporti ermeneutici più significativi, da quelli storici di Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Mann, T. W. Adorno a quelli più recenti. Corredata degli esempi musicali relativi a tutti i Leitmotive e di tavole che offrono una visione d'insieme della struttura tematica, offre la possibilità di addentrarsi nell'universo sonoro e drammaturgico di una delle più grandi creazioni di tutti i tempi per osservarne i dettagli compositivi e districarne la complessità dei significati. Il taglio non è tuttavia analiticamente specialistico: l'origine stessa del volume, didattica e divulgativa, si riflette nell'adozione di un registro intermedio, che non trascura le annotazioni utili allo studioso più competente, ma si presenta al contempo accessibile al lettore colto e appassionato.

Quali complicazioni dialettiche si annidano nella metafora «la musica è una donna» formulata da Wagner in Opera e dramma? E perché venti giorni prima di morire confidò alla moglie Cosima di essere «rimasto debitore al mondo di Tannhäuser»? Sono alcune delle domande cui viene data risposta negli scritti raccolti nel presente volume, frutto di ricerche condotte nell’arco di un ventennio.
