Pringle else a sterling copy of this odd book.A Gnani is is an enlightened teacher in one of the various Indian mystical schools. This is a comical novel about Indian mysticism. The Indo-American Book Company was a publishing house based in Chicago founded by Yogi Ramacharaka the pen name of William Walker Atkinson and his associates. It specialized in the publication of books on Eastern philosophy yoga metaphysics and occultism aimed at popularizing Indian spiritual teachings in the West. interest in Indian mysticism. Although they were very earnest in their ideas and publications it is good to see that they had some humor as well; the dedication reads as follows "Dedicated to those who are wise enough to be foolish upon occasion." The spine ends corners and edges of the book covers have some lightish rubbing bumping and wear along with some spots of fraying. There are a couple of spots of fading / discoloration on the spine of the book. The rear cover of the book has spots of rubbing and wear. The text pages are in generally clean bright condition. The front endpapers have spots of discoloration and the front endpaper has inked notations from at least two former owners. All three edges of the text block have toning and spots of foxing. The contents include: Modern Hypnotism SPiritual Mediumship Retributive Justice and much more. "Florence Huntley née Chance; 1855 – February 1 1912 was an American journalist editor humorist and occult author of the long nineteenth century. Hailing from Ohio she married the writer Stanley Huntley in 1879 and during this marriage she worked with him on his Spoopendyke sketches. After his death in 1886 she became a journalist and editor working for several publications including the St. Paul Pioneer Press Minneapolis Tribune The Washington Post and Iowa City Republican. After meeting John E. Acceptable copy of the first edition of what was seemingly the first book by Florence LaGanke food editor of the Cleveland Press for almost thirty years in addition to writing the "Nancy Pages" quilt column amongst other such efforts from her entry in The Quilter's Hall of Fame. Illustrations by W. Prentice Phillips throughout including bright color frontispiece. One page has separated p. 253-4 but remains with book; no others seem at risk of following it. Save this binding remains sound if a bit loose. Staining to spine beige cloth boards and text block the latter broaching many pages by about 1/8" around top corner length varying; a few pages stained more extensively including the woefully separated page and its nearest friends which appear to have fallen victim to the a splatter from the making of its recipe "College Fudge" though it is not sticky in any way. Corners and ends of spine bumped and fraying. This copy has clearly been used over the years! Interior is free of previous owner markings. Ships same or next day from Dinkytown Minneapolis Minnesota. Minor edge soiling noted. Paul Lauter spouse of Florence Howe is the Smith Professor of Literature at Trinity College. He has served as president of the American Studies Association and is a major figure in the revision of the American literary canon. Lauter writes about movement activities from the perspective of a full-time participant: 1964 Mississippi freedom schools; Students for a Democratic Society SDS; the Morgan community school in Washington DC; a variety of antiwar antidraft actions; the New University Conference; The Feminist Press which he helped found; and the United States Servicemen's Fund an organization supporting antiwar GIs. He got fired got busted got published and even got tenure. Florence Howe was an American author publisher literary scholar and historian. She earned a BA from Hunter College in English and a MA in English from Smith College. Her life and work were focused on feminism and social justice. She founded Feminist Press in 1970. In 1973 she became the president of the Modern Language Association. She was a college professor and taught women's studies at Goucher College. In 1971 she became professor of Humanities at SUNY. She wrote or edited more than a dozen books and more than 120 essays. Her essays were published in the Harvard Educational Review the Nation the New York Review of Books the Women's Review of Books and a variety of anthologies. Her books included a memoir A Life in Motion and a collection of essays Myths on Coeducation.
