196712854A COLLECTION OF 21 HOLOGRAPHIC LETTERS DATED BETWEEN 1967 THRU 1981 AND MORE.all from Don Dickerman self proclaimed 20th Century Pirate Restaurateur Artist Explorer Bon Vivante to premier early 20th century magazine illustrator John La Gatta and his wife Florence. Of these 21 letters 18 of the accompanying envelopes are adorned with full hand colored illustrations. Of these 6 are on printed "The Buccaneer Inn" envelopes and 6 written on "The Buccaneer Inn" stationery. Virtually all the other letters are on one of several different artistically printed stationery created by Dickerman and all letters are noted as coming from either Sarasota Florida or Intervale New Hampshire. Along with seven more envelopes void of letters of which 4 are once again adorned with full color hand illustrations; along with 3 postcards 2 from the "The Buccaneer Inn" which are printed in full color depicting cartoon buccaneers and noted as the art of Don Dickerman and the other from an earlier time / restaurant featuring a black & white photo of Black Andy Terrapin Hangman at the helm of a ship; along with 2 large Christmas cards with printed art work by Dickerman once again INSCRIBED to the La Gatta's; along with yet another holograph letter to the La Gatta's written in pencil; along with a 2 page typed letter carbon SIGNED from the La Gatta's to Dickerman with nice content as well. All in all a very nice little archive from this eccentric restaurateur of the 20's & 30's who also served along side naturalist William Beebe as his staff artist on Beebe's West Indies expedition in 1925 and in 1940 had a small part in Errol Flynn's pirate movie The Sea Hawk. 1740365403Sevilla Spain: Imprenta de las Siete Revueltas a costa de D. Juan Leonardo Malo Manrique 1740. Hardcover. Very good. A book by the first Hispanic American author and one of the first published writers born in what is now the United States. The book describes the visitation of the Archangel Michael San Miguel to Diego Lazaro a Mayan Indian in 1631 and the establishment of a sanctuary at San Miguel del Milagros the healing waters there and other miracles observed in the area.

This is the second edition of Florencia's book. The first edition also published in Seville in 1692 came from the press of Thomas López de Haro; this edition which does not indicate a publication year is dated to 1740 by the Library of Congress.

The verso of the title page has a full-page print of San Miguel printed inside a decorative type border. The image is signed "Lopez" in the plate possibly indicating the publisher of the first edition or a member of his family which made books for several generations. The plate is usually described as an engraving and there are certain fine details more typical of an engraving. However the image is on the verso of a text page which would be more common with relief printing like a woodcut which can be printed on the same press as type. The letters "Q. S. D." below the image Quis sicut Deus Who is like God the Latin translation of the Hebrew word for Michael appear to be in type and the decorative border appears to be made from four slugs with gaps between them at the corners. This and the lack of a platemark typically found around intaglio prints suggests a relief printing process.

Florencia St. Augustine Florida 1620 – Mexico 1695 has rarely been considered as an early Hispanic writer. Few no histories of early American writers have considered him although since his first book appeared in 1661 Sabin 24811 he is one of the first people born in the present-day United States to publish a book.

8 194 4 pages. Small octavo 5-7/8 by 7-1/2 inches. Second edition. Bound in 19th century quarter sheep over marbled boards. Very good with some fading to the spine; corners somewhat worn. Second gathering of sheets foxed. Imprenta de las Siete Revueltas, a costa de D. Juan Leonardo Malo Manrique hardcover

19330001509SPRINGFIELD BARREN PLAINS TENNESSEE. Good. 1933. On offer is a very interesting manuscript diary handwritten by Florence E. Hughes who lived in or near Springfield Tennessee in 1933. We believe Florence was an African American woman though this is not stated categorically in the book there seems little doubt given the clues some activities etc. Florence was born on July 4th 1867. Using a script based on the actual transcript notes taken during her trial Bresson focuses on the psychological and physical torture that Joan had to endure showing how these techniques were used to break her resolve and cause her to eventually recant her faith.

"With impeccable historical accuracy Bresson re-creates the story of the peasant girl who after leading an unsuccessful revolt against the government was brought to trial convicted of heresy and burned as a witch.
